ENDGAME SPOILERS and Thor.

SPOILERS FOR ENDGAME

Thesis statement: I think Thor’s Endgame storyline actually worked.

So there’s a very strange line of argument I’ve seen flying around, which is that Endgame was character assassination for Thor.

Here’s what I’ll say: remember that thing I said about how character arcs are crafted in service of the overarching ‘we don’t move on’ theme of Endgame? Well, here’s an example of that actually working to the character’s benefit.

Thor's character arc before Endgame has consisted of the following:

losing his mother

breaking up with his girlfriend

losing his father, losing his brother multiple times

the emotional complications of his relationships with both his father and his brother

being unable to save his people, and his brother, from Thanos

having not killed Thanos properly the first time and therefore watching half of all life melting away around him

finally killing Thanos with no ability to undo Thanos’ Snap

I feel like that level of mingled misfortune and failure would have anybody down for the count emotionally. I mean, is he not allowed to fall into alcoholism and depression and weight gain after all that?

(Nobody accused Brunnhilde, i.e., Vaklyrie, of being demeaned when we met her lost, drunk, depressed ass in Ragnarok; it made perfect emotional sense for her to be a mess, given her backstory.)

And, when it was time to get work done and fight Thanos again, Thor pulled it together to do his part. Sure, he needed all the support he could get, and he wasn’t at ‘godlike, mighty Thor capacity,’ but again, that only makes sense both emotionally and thematically.

And just in case we might have thought far Thor was completely down-and-out: he managed to steal Mjolnir away from his earlier The Dark World self, if I recall correctly. And he wielded both Mjolnir and Stormbreaker in the final battle. Depression and drunkenness aside, what does that say about Worthiness?
