About Masks

So what exactly made them be considered as the 'epitome' of their Arts by KiY? Was it their public eye, their actual mastery or just something intriguing for the eldritch being?

(Also: Philip can do anything with me and I'll be THANKFUL OHMYGOD *THAT MAN.*)

In a way, the King was collecting amazing artists in their lowest moments.

Alfhild's ideas for art and painting had been way ahead of her time, but because she was a young woman, she was brushed off and overlooked. This made the King want her so It could put her ideas to good use.

Dragiša's family was poor, and they were in the category that suffered from Serbia's floods the most. Dragiša's mind would often dream of architectural miracles he likely never would have been able to put on paper or to the world because of his family's social class. The King not only found Dragiša's creations wonderful, but also his drive.

Philip's twisted visions of sculpture and living beings was something the King found fascinating, though before his final breakdown upon looking at the King, Philip was never able to enact his twisted fantasies in his world before he joined Carcosa. The King only ever really needed to give Philip something to obsess over, that being It.

Moon was a bright child with a vivid imagination, but her being mixed in the 50s made her a target of racism and put her in constant danger. Literature was her escape, and despite her work being beautiful, she only had the strength to share it with her father. The constant talking down from the world around her made the King's arrival feel like comfort, and she left willingly to bring Its literary visions to life.

Florence, despite being considered ugly for her time and being a peasant, she managed to use her voice alone to rise the ranks of the entertainment world. This did cause the presence of a lot of men in her life who took advantage of her idealism back in the day. The King chose her because of that determination to rise above her station.

Francis was Prima Ballerina and dominated the stage more than anyone on it, to the point of open jealousy. She had already been hardened and disciplined at this point, and the King chose her to keep order. It used the loss of her father in the hands of a wealthy patron to Its advantage to get her to break down and "unlock her true potential".

Lee was a very young director whose films broke records because her visions were simply not stuck following the blueprint of the movie industry. Needless to say, this brought a lot of animosity from big wigs. Her parents were also never supportive of her career decision or her transition, which made her an easy and valuable target for the King.

Does the amount of face covered each mask has represent anything about their identity or confidence or is the variance solely stylistic?

Mask types:

Alfild's mask is a subversion of the mask of Scaramouche from Commedia Dell'Arte, but where Scaramouche was an unreliable servant, Alfhild is the opposite.

Dragiša dons a bauta mask because it was often worn by men who wished to simply blend in.

Philip, Moon, and Lee all don variations of the volto mask, who is famously symbolic of people who wish to hide their true identity and intentions, the latter more prevalent these days.

While Francis and Florence both wear a columbina, the difference is in their details. Florence has a pseudo spire in the middle and a veil over her not covered face as if to imply ahe conceals something. While Francis, if you take a closer look, her mask seems to have more than one face, which implies ulterior motivations.

Lee's is the most obvious one, being a Pierrot mask. The character who originally wore that mask was a naive lunatic who is unaware of the outside world, and often taken advantage of because of it.

Colors:

Aside from the yellow sign on their masks, almost of them are completely white in homage to the King's white mask in Its "true form". The placements often hold meaning. The KiY is always on Alfild's mind, Dragiša visions, Moon's entire identity is dependent on the KiY and anything Lee says is in favor of the King.

Philip and Florence are the only ones with colors other than yellow in their masks. The yellow sign being within a heart of Philip's forehead signified not only the KiY's strong hold on his mind, but also the very strong fascination, almost romantic feelings for the entity. Florence's colors arguably show her intense loyalty and competitive nature the most, as it is completely yellow shades and nothing else.

Francis' mask is the only black mask among her peers, which serves to say in a visual way something is not right with her.

what inspired you to make/design the masks? Do they all blindly follow the king? Uhhh idk what else to put but I love your au!!!! Also hugs to griffin I think he still deserves it

As for the Masks, they are actually a product of an old idea of mine which involved an anthology series with different stories through different time periods which would follow artists facing torment from the world and sometimes their respective industries, where the King in Yellow becomes the force to guide them towards an ultimately unforgiving path.

Now for loyalty.

Alfhild and Dragiša are the calmest ones worship wise. They listen to the King and do Its bidding, and they treat It as a casual worshipper would their god. Philip is obsessed to a downright depraved level. He thinks literally every word out of the King's mouth is gold that he would do anything to receive in his palms. Moon's relationship with the King in Yellow is also relatively unhealthy, as she feels like she can't do/wouldn't be anything without It. Needless to say she's as loyal as they come. Florence vies for attention almost as much as Philip, which makes them very clear rivals among the hierarchy of the Masks when it comes to the King's favour. Francis is the most distant Mask. She rarely speaks to her colleagues in a friendly manner, all her interactions with them professional. She is the only one seemingly keeping her adoration a secret and if it were not for the fact that she was doing her job, you would think she held no loyalty. Lee also has a very weird relationship with the King, as she has effectively made It a parental figure in her mind to replace her more cruel parents. Even if someone gives solid reasons as to why the King is cruel, she will straight up refuse to listen or acknowledge those facts. She'd rather die than betray the King.
