Gore Vidal adapted his 1960 play (which had been nominated for 6 Tony awards) for the screen and Lee Tracy (who had been nominated for a Best Actor Tony) was cast as Art Hockstader. Tracy was nominated for an Academy Award (Best Supporting Actor) for his performance.
