Lounge makeover For no particular reason, I’ve been spending quality time at home. As I say, no reason at all, just fancied shutting the door and living off pesto for a few weeks. No biggie. Remember the 80s when we left home and in our first gaff we painted everything white and exposed the floorboards? I don’t know if folk think of this as a lazy design now but a white wall/ floorboard combo can look delicious & objects can draw more attention than Ms Campbell at an airport during a health crisis. My living room has ‘Light & Space’ by Dulux with LumiTec particles that bounce light about (I sound like a Laboratoire Garnier ad). I don’t know if it’s a bit ‘Emperors New Clothes’ but it does glow more than other emulsions. I then, like in the 80s, added ‘things’ exchanging my Keanu poster, transparent phone (heading to eBay now) & Yucca plants with mid century travel posters, John Lewis throws and a big telly. Interiors can be like fashion: style vs comfort but I am obsessed with comfort. My comfy top tips: - I have the Hive to control my central heating, being able to control the temperature with such detail & ease makes for a relaxing atmos. - If a chair looks stylist but is like sitting on a medieval torture prop, it goes. The same for hipster, beaten up seating that could collapse at any mo. - Be in arms reach of a blanket at all times. They soften & add colour to a big, blockish sofa. - A range of lights. I love the soft, colourful glow of a lit vintage globe and wire LED fairy-lights - My father-in-law has a perfect square of comfy seating with a massive coffee table in the centre which is a great solution for socialising. I love this arrangement but have incorp a telly on one side. I have just about crawled out of the quagmire of the season. I have fully accepted that, rather than leap into a new year like a young gazelle, my style is to approach it very ‘gingerly’ (my partner thinks my use of that word is hilarious) I do, however, like a serious new year ‘home cleanse’ for the start of every year and armed with a great book, a present from @lenrayn I’m planning a mammoth eco friendly, clean and edit. I have been watching Marie Kondo on Netflix and realised I had been following her ethos quite naturally for years, my own version of ‘does this object inspire joy?’ (And therefore keep) being ‘does this object inspire a negative response?’ I.e: a blunt potato peeler, a chipped mug, a jumper that makes you look a weird shape, press photography books created with horrible clients, etc. The best time for this sort of massive edit is before a house move and when I last moved, I allowed my partner an amnesty of getting rid of any object I owned that he hated (except ET) He chose most of my art: a rather grisly pic by Frida Kahlo being the first thing he pointed at (barely got to the end of the sentence and he was screaming ‘that picture!!!’) so my house cleanse top tips: - owning clothes you hope to ‘slim into’ one day generally make you miserable and only ever get worn after a bout of dysentery, or similar - you can keep anything as long as you create a home for it. If you can’t find it, there is little point of owning it - Eco washing up liquid, lemons, bicarbonate of soda, white vinegar and facecloths. You need nothing more. - Facecloths: yellow for kitchen, green for general, blue for bathroom, grey for glass & light grey for the loo. Feel free to create your own colour code, if you must - Dyson & Karcher products both have batteries that die just after the guarantees end, avoid. - Create a digital ‘sentimental’ file on your computer: snap a birthday card message, place in recycling, etc I could go on (and on) but won’t. When I first viewed my house with the estate agent, I was led into a tiny room & feared (as it had a sink) it was the kitchen, my heart sank. He then announced this was actually the ‘laundry room’ I don’t think he was quite prepared for my reaction: running around the car park with my underpants on my head, fists raised, football chanting the ‘Hallelujah’ chorus. Laundry rooms in London are rare. My laundry room top tips, don’t hate me because I’ve got it all: - If you are planning a house from scratch (stick with me) put the laundry room by the front door as everyone will come in and say ‘your house smells nice’ - Colour-coded cleaning cloths. If you haven’t seen The League of Gentlemen sketch with the toad breeders ‘the towels…white for hands, brown for feet, green for torso, thighs and seat’ well, I have similar insanity with cleaning cloths. It’s not because I’m neurotic (‘oh, you are’ partner says) it’s, basically, the window cloths were causing a smear if they had a hint of non window-cleaning fluid. Also, all can be chucked on a hot wash & used hundreds of times. As much as I want to, I won’t bore you with the uses. - ‘Clean/dirty’ I chuck a mini chalkboard label I created with a white pen in baskets that are washed or about to be. This stops anyone chucking things in the wrong basket or if you can’t be arsed folding after it comes out the dryer you will know its clean when you do. - Spray rails. Guess who’s back? Shady’s back, cleaning hack... This ones a doozie as it cleans no less than four items with two very cheap and cheerful ingredients. Step one - The microwave. I must confess (and bear in mind only Judy can judge me) our microwave should be called the ‘drunk oven’ as it is only ever used to nuke food after a few ‘sherbets’ hence, it tends to get a bit messy and because you can happily slam it shut and forget about it, the little drunk oven can shamefully house caked on food for weeks (or worse, something blasted in good faith before falling asleep where it is caged, neglected and unnoticed). The solution is super simple: get a microwaveable bowl, add two cups of white vinegar, two cups of water and squeeze and dump a lemon then blast for approx 9 mins, leaving the door shut for a further 3 to let the steam and solution do its biz. The bowl will be super hot when you remove it. Wipe clean and enjoy. Drink less beer and sort your life out. Don’t chuck the solution away! Tip half in a jug, or similar and place any rust spotted knives in. Mine tend to get small rust patches from being cleaned in the dishwasher. Leave for 20 mins or so. Any stubborn spots, buff with a little piece of screwed up tinfoil. The other half of the solution! When this has cooled, place in a glass bowl and submerged your shower head in the solution overnight to shift pesky limescale build up. (limescale is a bugger in London) Rinse well to avoid smelling like an overdressed salad after your next shower. Surely the solution is done?!!! One final use: mix with baking soda, quickly pour down the sink and place a cloth over the plughole. The foaming reaction will clean and cleanse your pipes. 20th Dec - Who remembers the horror of getting lost as a kid? As a child that was easily distracted & fantastically nosey (still am), I got lost a lot. Most outings would involve a return journey with my dad pleading at my mum (or vice versa) ‘I haven’t got eyes in the back of my head!’ One such journey was after visiting Selfridges to see the ‘Alice in Wonderland’ grotto. Selfridges, in the 1970s, would design a breathtaking seasonal journey based on a theme & team this with their windows, which were like giant dioramas & contained no actual product. I was obsessed with Alice’s Adventures to the point the LP I had narrating the story (played on repeat for a year) mysteriously vanished (that’s another story) Mum, dad & myself headed to Oxford Circus & I am super excited. I remember it vividly: a dark corridor with dozens of doors with playing cards projected on the walls, vintage illustrations bought to life in 3D, amazing stuff. I overheard a woman saying she didn’t remember a part of the story illustrated so I filled her in whilst my parents looked apologetic & embarrassed. Soon after leaving the grotto I got lost. I was examining the toy Santa had given me (a mini tool kit, he knows me so well) & my parents disappeared. I was taken to a room & an announcement was made. While I waited I sat on a counter in a room off the shop floor, some lovely perfume counter girls: all smelling beautiful with shiny blond flicky hair and frosted blue eyeshadow fed me ‘Quality Street’ and distracted me from being upset. I was now very happy & this was becoming the highlight of the day until ma & pa arrived and ruined it, displaying that terrifying combo of relief and anger. 17th Dec- What’s the best present you ever received? Without a moments thought mine was my ‘Six Million Dollar Man’ action figure. He had three main features (parking being cool AF aside) a ‘bionic eye’ which was a hole in the back of his head you could look through: an action which had to be teamed with a rapid ‘du du du du du’ noise that was made on the show when he chose to use said eye, he had a curious, white skin coloured, condom thing on this arm you would roll back to reveal his ‘bionics’ and if you cranked his head left he had a button on his back which, when pumped, would raise his bionic arm upward and for a touch of drama he came with a car engine you could clamp into his hand to illustrate his strength. I LOVED him. I can even remember he was wrapped in a red bag from Hallmark Cards with a picture of Snoopy on, as in the bag they put your purchases in (it was a miracle I got Steve Austin at all so I wasn’t complaining) this amazing gift was coupled some weeks later by the sh!!est gift I ever received (excuse my language but there really isn’t another word for this ‘gift’) on my birthday, a few weeks after Christmas, I woke to a stiflingly hot bedroom. This was odd because my room, over a garage, with normally like a walk-in chiller. My sister, Amanda, came in with a downturned smile and said ‘that’s your birthday present’ pointing at (brace yourself) a portable heater!!! How the hell I managed to manufacture a sincere ‘thank you’ to my parents (rather than a completely appropriate ‘you gotta be fricking kidding me!’) for a blow heater is still beyond me. What made this gift even worse was, two weeks later, Auntie Ethel ‘borrowed’ it and I never saw it again! So, for that birthday, technically speaking, I got a two week loan of a blow heater.
