AND ROSES LeeSaar The Company
Saw an open rehearsal at the 14th St. Y of LeeSaar The Company’s forthcoming And Roses (this video is something of a spiritual trailer for the work, though far off its temperament, physical spirituality, and beauty).
And Roses embraces masculinity in all its beautiful, and ugly, guises. A work inside men, manly, erotic, embracing male femininity, if that makes sense. Capoeira explosive (or rather their Gaga?), rife with consideration of the male form—its anger, confusion, aggression, eroticism, destructiveness, and yearning.
Daring, blown away by its physicality and import. Metaphysical, beautiful, Lynchian, elegiac. Performers Shamel Pitts (dude is incredible) and Saar Harari (w/ a cameo by Lee Sher), just kill this shit. The physicality and meshing of selves is astounding.
My young son of course isn't ready for it yet, but I'd love for him to experience something like And Roses. What are we, we beings, so-called men? What a beautiful collection of moments, these three distinct movements. What things to say about masculinity and culture, and spirit. A reckoning. If as intimated this is just half of a larger whole I can't wait to see the finished piece.
