What is your Legacy?

Now that Urban Outreach is over for another semester, how will you continue your Legacy of service not only for Lee, but the communities you encounter on a daily basis? Jesus calls us to be leaders through service and Urban Outreach, is meant to be more than just a way to get the Lee 10 hours of service requirement. Our goal this semester was to start spark in each individual, a desire to serve more, reach people more, and to be a reminder of why we serve. After reading all the blog post of a small few of students who went on this trip, I think it's safe to say that this was a outstanding success.  Thank you to all students who have participated this semester in the Urban Outreach trip, with out you this type of ministry would not be possible.

Feed the Children

This blog post comes form Madison Dressler, she is a SLC member and was the Community Service Committee Rep for the Feed the Children trip in Nashville. the students who went on this trip spent the week-end working at the organization's warehouse packing boxes with food on an assembly line.

     "This past week-end for Urban Outreach, a group of twenty students and I traveled to Nashville to serve at Feed the Children’s warehouse. The purpose and mission behind Feed the Children is to pack and send boxes of food across the world to disaster relief and other areas that desperately need help. Their mission does not stop there, however. They also seek to provide these people with jobs, clean water, and education opportunities. Feed the Children looks to not only provide for their physical needs but to also to change their lives. At the warehouse, our job was to unpack a recently received shipment and prepare another shipment to be shipped out. Specifically, I was assigned the job of assembling and taping together the boxes we would be packing. Along with another senior from Lee, we taped together approximately 900 boxes! At first, it was a challenge to learn to use the persnickety tape roller. It seemed to have a mind of its own and I quickly had tape everywhere except for the box. After a hundred boxes or so, we finally mastered the taping technique (as we liked to call it) and were efficiently taping together boxes without getting tape all over ourselves.   Once we finished working on Friday evening, Feed the Children sent 955 Christmas cards with us to fill out to send those overseas who probably would not get any other Christmas card this year.

 They hoped we would just fill out some of them, however, our group worked together and filled out every single card that they sent with us.  This week-end was a wonderful week-end full of laughter and service spent cultivating deep relationships with other students on campus. It was a week-end  that pushed me to contemplate the legacy I am leaving by the life that I lead. Am I leaving a legacy of God’s unconditional love that reflects Him in everything that I do? Or am I leaving behind a self-absorbed, conceited legacy? This week-end, I realized that just as that tape stuck to everything it touched, my legacy of love must also stick to everything that I do, whether it be service, schoolwork, or time spent with friends."

Rainbow Acres

This blog post is coming from Micah Francen, she is an active member in SLC and was the Group Leader for the trip in Knoxville that went to Rainbow Acres. The students who went on this trip spent the weekend interacting with the residents of this organization, which is facility for mentally handicapped adults. "Rainbow Acres was a group home for mentally disabled adults. That's basically all the information I got about this place before I and thirteen other people packed up to spend the weekend with them. I honestly didn't know what to expect: how severely handicapped were these people? What was the facility like? How bad was the smell going to be? As bad as I feel for thinking the worst of this place, I did. But what I experienced there was nothing like what I expected: I had fun. It didn't feel like a service project; it felt like being a guest in someone's home. Sure we helped them clean their rooms, but what we really did was get to know the people by seeing their treasured possessions. Jeff loved vintage cars, Billy loved playing Amaris Cart, Toni loved makeup and her boyfriend, and Peggy loved dogs and beadwork. It was so cool to be accepted and welcomed by the residents of Rainbow Acres and as much as this weekend was about helping them, they did more for us. You see, they didn't need our help, hey needed our friendship and when we gave that to them wonderful things happened."

This is a short 5 minute video, that shows the history, importance, and impact that the City of Refuge has on their community. It gives you the prospective of the founder, and illustrates their brand “Where Good Works,” by the testimonies of real life people who have been positivity effected by this organization. This is another organization that Lee students served in Dalton GA this semester on the Urban Outreach trip.

This video shows the history, importance, and impact that the Room in the Inn has on the homeless community of Nashville. Room in the Inn was one of the other organization that Lee Students were able to outreach serve this semester.

Feed the Childern

 This blog post comes form Alex Staup,he is a SLC member and was another Community Service Committee Rep for the Feed the Children trip in Nashville. 

   "Feed the Children Nashville was an incredible service project to experience for Urban Outreach. From box cutting, to folding, to taping, to packing, to unpacking, to repacking, to stacking, and more, the teamwork and purpose displayed by the service group was a humbling thing to be a part of and observe. It strikes me most to consider the hands that have and will touch not only those boxes, but hearts around the world. Between the actual making of the cardboard, our group's handling of the boxes, other groups' works with FTC, shipping and handling workers transporting skids of boxes, and volunteers giving out goods to people in need, all have worked together for the sole purpose of one smile and one small impact for good. It shows how great such a simple act can be when encouraged and enabled by the grace of God."
