Zelda Month 2019 #7 - Leever
The heck even are Leevers??? They look all fleshy in early art, but are clearly plants in ALttP and OoT. I like to think that they are something akin to a starfish, so that they fit into a niche with Digdogger and Like-likes as weird tube monsters that sometimes have spines.
Leevers can actually be encountered pretty early in Zelda Uno, though they are more common in deserts. They also demonstrate that color variants of enemies can be more different than just how many hits it takes to kill them.
Orange Leevers are easy to kill but very aggressive. They make a beeline for Link and are only stopped by death. Blue Leevers seem to mind their own business, but are more sturdy. It takes more hits to fell them, and their seemingly random movement makes them tricky if you don’t realize that they always resurface in the direction they were heading when they go underground.
If you get both types in one area, the result is surprisingly Pac-Man like, with some enemies running you down while others seem to cut off your escape! It’s a nice example of how predictable behaviors in enemies can be mixed to create new threats!
Currently trying out the first Zelda game.
To say that I suck at playing it is an understatement.
That awkward moment when you realize the Leevers are endless.
