Stuck in the Left Lung
in the PS2 Family Guy Video Game
Can't breathe. Again.
False enthusiasm.
I'll be at the hospital having tests run all day tomorrow. I'm trying to be excited in order to keep the terror I'm avoiding at bay. At this point, I don't know what to hope. I don't know the best case scenario. I don't like not knowing. I'm just ready for any concrete information. I would also really like my left lung to function again.
#161: “The right lung takes in more air than the left.”
True.
This is because the right lung has three lobes, while the left lung has only two. The right lung, though shorter than the left, is also wider. The heart is in the center of your chest, but it’s closer to your left side, so there needs to be less area in the left lung to accommodate the heart.
left lung: from subpar to stellar in one brief moment of understanding.
Instilled in my brain, for as long as I have known, is the unfair + unreasoned notion that the left lung, having only two lobes, is inferior to (as in value + worth, not location) the right lung, having three lobes. There is no reason for me to have believed this, I do not fall for the common misconception that more, bigger, stronger, louder or faster is better- I refuse to believe it, in fact.
So, why would one organ having more of something than its counterpart seem better, more efficient + useful? There is simply no explanation for this reasoning, other than complete lack of reflection.
I close my eyes and visualize the human body stripped of skin, epithelium, fat + muscle tissues, removing the bones, cartilage and leaving only the organs. The body’s engine, what without we would fail. An incredible system functioning autonomically (occurring involuntarily) and God willing flawlessly. It is then when I fully realize the importance of the two vs. three lobed structure. A design so utterly perfect + simple I had not realized the reasoning even after studying human anatomy for the past 3 solid years.
The Heart.
The left lung has two lobes, rather than three, because one of its primary functions is protection of the heart. How could I have ever surpassed that beauty? I’m almost embarrassed with myself for admitting this, who has never realized this? It is so eloquent + understandable yet so overlooked in my mind. The perfect beating, pumping, life supporting center of each individual protected by the one organ I’ve thought for so long to be inadequate + inefficient. I almost produced tears thinking of the beauty in it, the artful design of the body, mechanically proportioned for protection, strenuous effort and pure efficiency. How could something so amazingly built have a flaw as simple as a bilateral difference in organ size? It does not.
Once again, the body’s anatomy & physiology astounds me.
Left lung, you are one stellar organ.
