“I miss you,” she whispers through a tight throat. “I thought I’d never see you again. I thought you were gone for good. I thought…” The air shifts. She freezes. A warmth—gentle and strange—settles in the room. No wind, no dramatic light show. Just… a presence. Familiar. Steady. Unmistakable. Then— “You know,” a low voice drawls from behind her, a little rough, a little amused, “for someone who thinks I’m not coming back… you sure know how to summon me.”

"I want to be a hunter." The words are plain, steady. No hesitation. No apology. Just a quiet declaration spoken like it has been turning over and over in her chest for days. Sam's hands freeze on the edge of the book. He slowly looks up. And that's when he sees her. She stands just inside the room, framed by the soft golden light spilling in from the hall. Her hair is braided loosely back, face pale but calm. And draping over her, loose, worn-in, and far too big, is a flannel shirt. Faded red and black plaid. It hangs off her shoulders like armor, though she didn't know the weight it carried. It was Dean's.

After a long moment, Nellie finally speaks. “Tell me more. About the two of you. Hunting. What you faced. I want to know the truth. I want to know him. The man who lived in the dark to keep others safe.” Sam’s mouth tugs into a small, wistful smile. “Okay,” he says softly. “Then let me tell you about a hunt we went on together at the end of my college days. Just me and Dean. A Woman in White. In Jericho, California. He picked me up from Stanford and dragged me into it—and, well, nothing was the same after that.” And so, he tells her. Quietly, patiently. Piece by piece. Story by story. And Nellie listens.
