(Spoilers for Legacyverse) If Mistake is Wu's and Garmadon's mom, does that mean they're 75% Oni and 25% Dragon or is Mistake also half Dragon and half Oni like the FSM???
Ooh yay, been dying to talk about this one actually (this is more than what you asked for, but it’s all connected, so I’m going for it!):
SO, the FSM is 50% Oni and 50% Dragon; Mystake is still 100% Oni. But in the long run, this doesn’t actually matter THAT much.
Oni genes carry the Essence of Destruction; Dragon genes carry the Essence of Creation. When combined in any capacity, they can manifest in any ratio, regardless of what amount the parents carry. As long as there’s some semblance of Oni and Dragon to be found within, the ultimate combination is going to be random, unless influenced by an outside factor. Could there have been other Oni/Dragon combinations that went unnoticed because one side ended up overtaking the other? Perhaps. Perhaps. (But nothing that actually affects the plot; it’s just a perfectly possible possibility...at the moment).
Anyway, the FSM was the first time both aspects manifested in perfect balance, allowing him to easily harness both the Essences of Creation and Destruction in harmony, and that’s what makes him so powerful and revered (and unparalleled, until the Overlord rolls in). And, not having the dominant genes of an Oni or a Dragon resulted in him being born in a completely new form: that of a human. (Of which he went on to create beings in Ninjago that resembled himself, as referenced in Chapter 15 of Born to Be).
So, knowing what we do, as Mystake is all Oni, and the FSM is part-dragon, there’s going to be at least a trace of both within their children, thus their children are going to have a random genetic makeup, right? Wrong, as the FSM in all his uniqueness has perfectly harnessed the Essences of Creation and Destruction, which again, are associated with Dragon genes and Oni genes respectively. Therefore, by passing on the Elemental Essences to his children, there is an outside factor influencing his sons’ genetic makeup.
From there, this means that the genetic makeup for the Spinjitzu Brothers becomes entirely determinate on the Essence they inherited from their father. THUS, inheriting the Essence of Destruction caused Garmadon to be 75% Oni and 25% Dragon, as one would have expected anyway, while the presence of the Essence of Creation caused Wu to be 75% Dragon and 25% Oni.
Both still have traces of each within them, but due to the Essences, Garmadon is more influenced by his Oni side, and Wu is more influenced by his Dragon side (as implied by the show). Therefore, they could have achieved the balance their father had simply by coordinating with one another, as they perfectly compliment one another (and are consistently incapable of finding balance within themselves, ironically), but the Devourer’s venom led to that not happening.
Which then brings us to the case of Lloyd: he is easily 50% human for obvious reasons, but then what about the rest? Well, while he did not inherit an Elemental Essence, he did inherit the Green Element from his grandfather, therefore cancelling out any dominance Garmadon’s Oni side would have had, leaving Lloyd’s genetic makeup as 50% human, 25% Dragon, 25% Oni.
Aaaaaand, despite having some traces of the Devourer’s venom within him thanks to Garmadon (as mentioned in Chapter 18 and Chapter 28), Lloyd isn’t susceptible to it because there’s not enough Oni in him for it to feed off of, plus the trace of Dragon also suppresses it. (If the Devourer bit a normal human, they’d turn wicked right away; when it bit Garmadon, he was very quickly effected due to his high amounts of Oni, but the trace of Dragon in him also helped him stave it off for so long).
And finally, due to having perfectly balanced Dragon/Oni genes within him, but not to the ideal ratio, THAT is what gives Lloyd the Master Builder/Breaker ability—essentially the Essence of Creation and Destruction like his grandfather before him, but with limitations. Thus, we once again have an individual who wields perfectly equal amounts of Oni/Destruction and Dragon/Creation within him, and when combined with inheriting the Green Element, we now have an individual with unparalleled power...that one would call equivalent to the FSM himself.
Did I spend too much time taking all this into consideration? Perhaps. Perhaps.
// I drew this in 2015 but never posted it.
God the thing I love most about your fic is when you went into detail in the ‘Zane is weird’ chapter about how the ninja’s personalities fuel their powers. Less so for Cole and Jay, but the whole “Ice is strongest when you have nothing left to lose.” And “Fire burns brightest when you have everything to protect.” It fucks me up every time. Look at them go. Look at those funky ninja go.
hhhhsdfgfds THANK YOU, that was actually one of my favorite quotes that kinda flew under the radar x3 But, Cole and Jay’s personalities do reflect their powers too, I just haven’t had a good chance to really drive it home for them (...yet).
Lightning thrives on ingenuity and opportunity; at school, and even among his friends, Jay doesn’t get very many opportunities to stand out on his own, as he keeps fading into the background because everyone else’s personalities, strengths, and significance tend to overtake his. But when Jay does get his moments, fleeting and uncommon as they are, they’re always brilliant, and memorable, and leave an impact (just like lightning—and this is kinda demonstrated in seasons that focus on him too!).
Earth, meanwhile, is a constant in our lives—always beneath our feet, always present in some fashion, and it breaking apart, unable to support things like it’s supposed to, tends to lead to catastrophe. Cole’s always torn between trying to just keep to himself (which is impossible as school as he’s infamous for being a “troublemaker” at school and not to mention leader of a group of ninja) and trying not to let anyone down (as so many people rely on him for a lot of different things, to the point of even maybe taking him for granted). Cole’s always giving others his support, but just the same, should that weight become too much to bear because he can’t focus on himself...*coughs*
Jay wants to stand out but gets swept up in the presence of others, thus has to fight for his moment to shine; Cole wants others to thrive, and will always offer support to that cause even if it’s at his own expense, but he constantly (and ironically) finds himself as the one everyone’s looking to instead. Jay’s moments are striking but temporary; Cole’s moments are constant but mundane (by comparison). Thus, they are equal but opposite as Kai and Zane are.
...Buuut those are just a few assorted rambling thoughts I’ve had about them x3
I'm sorry I haven't posted anything new in a while, been working on projects a lot but ajdjfk here's some p rough sketches I did the other day,, was researching fairy brides in Scottish, Irish and Welsh folklore and fell down a rabbit hole, will put a couple of my favorite ideas i stumbled across below the cut but akdkdk Just thinking about Maggie feeling a little homesick for the fae realm occasionally. She doesn't regret a single choice she made tho.
Wait if there’s a time discrepancy where the stuff in ninjago history was only a couple hundred years ago, why are we in the two thousands?
As mentioned on the Elemental Compass post, there’s a point where ‘time began’—that event, which I shan’t go into too much detail, is the event where the Element of Time manifested, and from where people actually began keeping track of time progression. That event was 2000 (and eleven) years ago, hence why that is relevant to the current date.
As for the Time Discrepancy itself, which made people believe that the series of “bad events” that happened in the 1900’s actually happened way, waaaaay earlier, I can’t go into it without spoiling plot points of Season 2 (but it does have to do with Wu and Koko and does tie in with that “side group” trying to set free the “truth of the world”, sooo have fun gnawing on that)
Ooh, ooh! Follow up question: What age/grade is everyone in? I know it was mostly stated for the ninja, but how does it compare for everyone else?
For 20X1-20X2 (and accurate up to Season 3):
Seniors (Age 17-18): Cole Brookstone, Zane Julien, Meghan Marshall, Skylor Chen
Juniors (Age 16-17): Kai Smith, Jay Walker, Olivia Omar, Jesse Marvell, Chad Chen
Sophomores (Age 15-16): Nya Smith, Antonia Sawyer, Maggie Taylor, Sunni Dayes, Harleigh Kognito, Chamille (Mikey) Carmichael, Other Minor Characters
Freshmen (Age 14-15): Lloyd Garmadon, Harumi Hutchins, Gene Noble, Brad Tudabone, Sally Muse, Other Minor Characters
Will enter the high school in the following academic year: Miranda Marvell, Nelson Roise
What would everyone’s grades look like? I’d assume Cole is struggling a bit since he took a lot of advanced classes with Zane, but what about the others?
From Best to Worst-
Jay: The guy that gets good grades without studying, picks up on topics without ever really knowing why + being unable to explain his process to other people to help them. Normally a straight A student but ninja activities tend to mess with his average (hence why he's always doing make up work when he can) and he struggles a bit with chemistry just due to the sheer amount of information within it (but Nya is good at making it easier for him to understand/remember).
Nya/Zane: Always studying whenever possible and putting in an over-amount of effort to maintain their grades. Zane has one or two classes where he tends to fall short due to different interpretations of the subject/his lacking people skills, while Nya's grades drop when she struggles to understand the content on the first try and thus gives up, but both of them remain top of their classes. Mostly A's and high marks but with a B or two.
Lloyd: Not as effortlessly smart as Jay nor a sucker for studying like Nya or Zane, but still pretty brilliant when he actually applies himself. He likes learning, he just doesn't always like the way he's taught, which leads to some struggles...especially when his teachers don't particularly like him. Would have roughly the same grades as Nya and Zane if his teachers weren't especially hard on him for being...him.
Jesse: Slightly above average, but still pretty average, does well enough to not fail at least. Excels more in the expressive, artsy classes than the more information-based analytical ones (inverse to his sister), but has the grades you would expect from the average teenager.
Kai: Slightly under average, but still pretty average. His grades are all over the place: he has really high marks in half his classes (Accounting, Metal Shop, Economics) while the other half are abysmal (Language, Social Studies, whatever he has for Science) and require him to be tutored every now and then (if he doesn't manage to sweet talk Jay into doing his homework).
Olivia: Doesn't take school too seriously, as she has far more ""important"" things to do; the kid that rarely ever finishes an assignment or homework properly but still somehow manages to do well on the tests/exams. Is not failing, but those are NOT grades you'd want to take home on a report card.
Cole: Only managed to squeak into (Zane's) advanced classes because passing them would guarantee he'd graduate; otherwise literally could not care less about school or anything that comes with it. The kid who could do pretty well if they wanted to, but is just so done with the system and dealing with too much outside pressure that they just don't want to anymore. Would be on the same level as Lloyd if he tackled school the way he approaches being a ninja. Is just barely getting by with his grades, mainly due to the help of Zane.
