That is actually just misinformation perpetuated by fanpages. There's nothing preventing a future Danish monarch from marrying another Dane.

When dynastic marriages were still the norm, obviously royals had to look abroad for spouses if they wanted to avoid too much inbreeding but it wasn't a rule. Frederik VI's daughters come to mind in terms of Danish royals having married other Danes: Caroline married her father's cousin, Ferdinand (not just a Danish prince in his own right but son of the hereditary prince), and Vilhelmine obviously married her second cousin (and Ferdinand's nephew), Frederik, (also a Danish prince from birth who would go on to become Frederik VII).

I think the misinterpretation stems from a number of things:

I believe both Frederik IX and QMII famously implored their children to find foreign spouses – and obviously you need the monarch's consent for marriage, so I guess you could say an heir could be disallowed to marry another Dane in the sense that the monarch would have to deny them permission to marry this person. But that's a pretty big swing and if the heir is really passionate about marrying this person, they could just wait until they themselves ascends the throne and grant themselves the permission.

M&F's former private secretary, Per Thornit, has also gone on record saying that an heir "can't" marry a Dane as Denmark is a small country and it would overfamiliarise the DRF – some rather uncouth drivel about how you can't have the Crown Princess's uncle sit and tell drunken stories about her. But again, that "can't" is a matter of opinion and nothing legal or ethical prevents Christian from marrying another Dane. Even Frederik once went on record saying as much about his own situation. And the BRF is proof that nationality doesn't dictate whether or not you have open-mouthed relatives (Kate and Meghan both did).

But obviously there are benefits to choosing a foreign spouse. Everyone in Denmark knows who Christian is and I totally see how that begs the question: Does this person like me for being me or do they like ✨ The Crown Prince ✨?

I always think of what Stevie Nicks said about what makes her and Lindsey Buckingham's relationship so special: "I loved him for all the right reasons". Everyone else sees him through the lens of being Lindsey Buckingham from Fleetwood Mac but Stevie chose him before all the fame, all the money, all the hits. She was trying to find ways to make hamburger helper different after he put her electric skillet on the gas stove and embroidered flowers on his jeans while he was practising his guitar. And similarly, when Frederik met Mary, she had no idea who he was. She chose him for who he is as a person and not a public perception of who he is or as the future monarch of Denmark. It's hard for royals to find that within their own countries.

Do I think he will end up with his current girlfriend? I doubt it. But not for reasons pertaining to her nationality.
