Pip pointed out that Katara is in the same non-bender-y parent situation as Toph.  I thought I was being observant - turns out it was tunnel vision. Still leaves an interesting, sort of unexplored, aspect of the whole... element bending thing.

Late night tumblring

Where did Toph get the ability to earthbend?  I know she learned from the badgermoles, but what I'm curious about is... whether bending is genetic or if it's some sort of genetic mutant effect that can affect anyone.  Was one of Toph's parents secretly an earthbender? Can anyone be born as an earthbender? If yes to the latter, does that mean there's potentially other airbenders out there - rendering my one "avatarfact" moot? All this and more next week.  Same bat time same bat channel. Zzz
