The Role of the Guardian
In Homestuck the kids start attracting their aspect from birth. John lands on a jokeshop, Dave lands on a record store, Jade lands out in the middle of nowhere with no one around but Pa. These are examples of seemingly innocuous circumstances being coded with their aspect on further inspection.
The role of the guardian seems to be to act as a mediating force between what the kids will attract into their lives, ensuring they don’t get hurt, while also allowing them to gradually express that imagination more and more until it develops. The absence of a guardian is the absence of a mediating force, and the incompetence of a guardian leads to more traumatic incidents happening as a result of the child’s natural pull towards all elements of their aspects (good and bad). On a planet like Alternia, minimizing death of “worthy” individuals while putting them in frequent legitimate danger is ideal because it ensures trolls are always developing their classpect powers and getting stronger. So rather than trolls raising each other, they have Lusus who can sort of protect at least against physical threats in most cases, but are not intelligent enough to defend their child from aspect related traumas. The closest thing to parents on Alternia in this respect are the legislacerators (the law) and jadebloods. The latter of which legally cannot take care of anyone but the mother grubs or afford to get attached and are also kids themselves, and the former only exist as a force of punishment and direct harm rather than as protectors.
