Ataja Jackson '20 Double major Art & Psychology AAD Capstone Blackberry The complete collection of poetry prints is titled “Blackberry” and inspired entirely by Rupi Kaur. Rupi tells beautiful stories of her heritage, her culture, love, life and humanity - all through poetry. I print the poems in black ink, 13-14 point font, cover the back of the paper with charcoal, and then trace over the letters with a pen so that the text transfers to the canvas. The next step is to follow the same method but this time with the image I’ve chosen to complement the poem or prose. The images are also mine, drawn traditionally in graphite on sketchbook paper. Lastly, I trace the letters and the lines of my drawing with ink. “Blackberry” is a merging of two methods of expression I feel most comfortable with - poetry and art. There is an order, each poem is arranged with another so that they effectively narrate the story I want to convey, but they can be viewed in a multitude of ways. It does not matter how they are viewed aside from the order, because my healing process is not linear. Langley Pierpont '20 Major: Architecture AAD Department Honors - Architecture Reimagining the Deconstructed City 1/5 of fifteen points Title (The Loft [Faneuil Hall]): Loft (lôft) n. the sky; the sphere of the air. I wanted to create something that brought the people in the structure closer to the sky--both literally and figuratively. The design consists of a single box shape, framed in rebar, that is reiterated, moved, and scaled in size and proportion. Most of the boxes are clad in a reflective mirror surface, some are left empty, and some are glass on five sides and mirrored on the bottom to reflect the sky, so that even as you are looking down you are seeing what is above you. On the roof of the building the boxes are compiled to create areas to sit, relax, eat, and look out over the area. The structure as a whole provides a dimension to Faneuil Hall that allows people to overlook the activities below from a new perspective. This semester I sought to re-examine the severed connections between the neighborhoods in Boston and establish new relationships between areas that were not originally designed to work in unity. My project implements a series of fifteen architectural moments, designed as a deconstructed residential building across a rectilinear grid to provide a cohesive interpretation of the city. This building is structured analogically using cues throughout architectural history. Throughout the semester I focused on developing five of the fifteen points-- the greenhouse, the boudoir, the caldarium, the loft, and the maashaus. Sam Pancer '20 Major: Design - Product Minors: Marketing and Apparel Design AAD Department Honors - Design Floral Fantasy - Fresh flowers that were arranged onto a flatbed scanner and then uploaded to a digital platform form the basis of Sam Pancer's floral designs for this project. Design was then sent out to be printed on cotton fabric by an outside company. Quilting work on the jacket was done using a specialized quilting machine in a studio on mountaintop campus. I don’t really strive to represent reality in my paintings, but simply to express and analyze my own thoughts and emotions through a different medium. Undeniably, all of us find our own thoughts and feelings are every bit as real as the physical, observable world; they simply don’t exist within it. I find that painting helps me manifest these feelings and better understand my own emotions and experiences. Alexa Nunamaker ‘20 Design and Art History Major conc. Graphic and Product Design AAD Department Honors - Design For this project, Alexa chose to incorporate aspects of graphic and product design work with her love of textile and fiber arts through electronic embroidery onto knitwear. As an avid knitter for over a decade, Alexa took this opportunity to push herself and create patterns for scarves, shawls, beanies and sweaters, utilizing different colors and variations. The other component to her project was creating embroidery designs that are capable of being embroidered onto the knitwear. With Professor Chupa's help and the use of the Brother Embroidery Machine, Alexa was able to create wearable art pieces that embody contemporary motifs.
