Stone #adam williams #wesley addy #Celia Lovsky #Willis Bouchey #Robert Ellenstein #Leith Stevens #a frustrating almost brilliant noir torn from real life news reports; a gritty study of organised crime and its nearly impenetrable hold #on the legitimate fashion business (and the struggle to unionise workforces) would be a great little crime film. alas the waters #are muddied by some soap opera angles on father son relationships and would be romances. the film isn't helped by Mathews' rather wet #performance as a Good Little Rich Boy who doesn't understand how his father has become tangled with the mob; it isn't really his fault‚ the #part just stinks. the film would be ten times better told from the POV of Loggia's firebrand union organiser (he's brilliant‚ in his first #major film role). likewise Wiseman and Addy in much smaller parts do a great deal more to keep the film rolling than the yawnsome lead #characters. quite probably this has something to do with some behind the scenes shenanigans (Robert Aldrich was to direct at first and in #fact had the film two thirds done when he was fired and replaced by Sherman; rewrites and reshoots won't have helped the finished picture)#still if nothing else this is a firmly pro union film‚ which is refreshing; i wonder if a major studio would do the same in today's USA?
