Clark didn't understand the more intricate details of the Kryptonian language, it's hard to practice a language where over ninety nine percent of the speakers were dead and gone.

Clark understood enough to catch every few words. Children. Please. Help. Food. Sleep.

Kara spoke fluently, and she was a great help in those first few weeks. She sat at the bedside of a doomed man and his children and she spoke in the tones of a woman who knew exactly how it felt to leave an entire people behind.

Kara translated for the rest of them, most of the time. She only stopped when the man started crying. Started recalling something terrible that had happened, that had put him in the state he crashed landed in.

When asked, a little later on, outside of the hearing range of the medical bay, Kara had wiped away her own tears, and said that thirty years was a long time to survive on a ship that was only meant to be on an two month school trip.
