Dear Y/A authors... please, understand that male characters and their creation, even in “female-targeted” books, is important. Even girls can feel connection with them, like them, identify with their problems. Especially when it comes to mental disorders and problems. Please stop writing boys with depression as “grimm and mysterious”, boys abused and assaulted as violent, boys with trauma and PTSD as “sexy psycho*ats”. Let them take care of themselves. Let them heal. Let them be understood.

There is enough of downplaying and ignoring boys’ mental health in real world and treating it with toxic masculinity. Books where mental disorders of men are just “sad backstory” or character traits for male characters are harmful even for girls. Not only because they are teaching dumb stuff like “men feel in different ways, men’s minds are different”, but also they normalize the problems which in end can affect also a lot of women/their partners (problems with escaping abusive relationship, because the way the partner acts is considered normal or even worse - attractive, instead of a problem).

Let’s also not forget that a lot of girls identify with male characters as well as with female ones, so this also can affect them in the way that they will start downplaying their own mental health issues.

And also let’s stop making people with mental disorders villains or treating the mental problems as a reason to become villain.

Anti-K people in this fandom love to call the time when Kavinsky touched Ronan’s back unconsensualy for 0,001 seconds assault or even worse, but turn completely blind eye on the fact that Ronan threw Kavinsky on the car’s hood, held him down and punched him in the face and gave him bloody nose, because K didn’t want to let him and Gansey in on his party.

Guess what, that also was unconsensual touch, but y’all just love cherry-picking the facts about your faves, huh?

Don’t get me wrong, both situations are bad and both are unconsensual touch - that’s exactly my point, because some people tend to ignore one when talking non-stop about the other.
