Moon Knight Episode 5 and Moon Knight Comic Spoilers
The show is largely based on the Lemire Moon Knight run (which I'm about to spoil a bunch of and highly recommend reading).
It's also why I'm here to assure you that Steven is coming back. In this run, like the show, Marc finds himself trapped in a hospital that, among other things, represents his mind. He gets this idea that to escape and be ok, he needs to kind of let his alters go (note that the comics don't necessarily represent DID accurately). At this point, Jake, Marc, and Steven all do whatever they feel like with little regard for the others, and that is driving Marc insane quite literally.
For reference, Marc is in the Mr. Knight suit. Notice his alters fade into sand as he sends them away.
These panels represent a flawed idea that to be worthy/to be whole/to have a good life means there can be no other identities, no mental illness, no brokenness. In the comics, Marc believes this at first; he wants to wish his alters away to get control of himself. In the show, the Egyptian afterworld system perpetuates this idea too. Until it's only Marc, he's not worthy for the field of reeds.
This moment in the comics also leads to this heart wrenching exchange between Marc and Steven that we saw mirrored in episode 5 and was pretty much where I completely lost it.
Fast forward a few comics to "you didn't think you could get rid of us that easily" when Moon Knight (who is almost always Jake) and Steven return to rescue Marc (a lot like the show, the alters all have their own physical form in the scenes happening in Marc's mind). Marc of course is like tf I told you to go away, and Jake and Steven are like that's not how it works at all.
All of that leads up to this moment where Marc accepts the three identities (shout out to my boy Jake, we miss you) and his mental illness as part of him. Rather than cutting off Jake and Steven like he tried to earlier, Marc accepts them and realizes that he can have a life and be whole with them and that they are even necessary to that wholeness.
(Also he kills Khonshu who just comes back in literally the next comic, but I appreciate the symbolism).
All this to say, I don't know how they'll do it but this comic run that is so excellently connected to the show brought Steven back almost immediately as a key part of Marc accepting his DID and I'm sure the show will bring Steven back for a similar purpose.
Bonus: When Oscar Isaac has bandages on his nose it's absolutely a reference to Marc's look during the whole Lemire run
