A band like Lemon Jelly wouldn’t have existed without the likes of Jean-Jacques Perrey in the world, and across the 30 year time-gap there’s a lot these two albums have in common. Aside from the focus on synthesized electronic music, jazzy lounge pop and “Music to Chill Out To” there’s the humour. Perrey prefers musical puns and simply not taking himself too seriously, despite being a legitimately ‘serious’ musician, whilst everything about Lemon Jelly feels a little tongue-in-cheek: artfully clever with a love of British whimsy.   There was a lot of downtempo-disco-lounge music around like this in the early 2000s, but this has a more intelligent, almost conceptual feel to it, than many of their contemporaries. This is largely due to the samples used and the subject matter. Ramblin’ Man takes a sampled vocal from Charlton Heston as its inspiration and is thereafter a list of all the places one might ramble to, from Kingston to Kentish Town. Elements is a beautiful simple reduction of a child’s physics lesson, and Space Walk incorporates snippets from a Nasa recording of an astronaut exclaiming “It’s beautiful up here”. None of this is to diss the album, I like it. Its carefree sunniness is an absolute tonic in this winter of our discontent. It certainly feels like a lifeline to a lost world, a lost horizon. Back in 2002 when the future was still so bright, you gotta wear shades.  That is, with the exception of the track Experiment Number Six which, along with the delightfully quirky single Nice Weather For Ducks, may be my favourites. Its tone somewhat jars here, given that its about an experiment in which the subject dies. No standing over the stove stirring a pot like traditional lemon curd. It's a wonderful classic English Lemon Curd. The curd is tart, yet sweet, thick and velvety. Making it prefect for scones, as well as a delectable filling for cakes, pastries and tarts. INGREDIENTS: 2/3 cup Allulose sweetener (I find this sweetener works best) 2/3 cup freshly-squeezed lemon juice zest of 2 lemons (approximately 2 teaspoons) 2 large eggs 6 tablespoons butter, melted (if using unsalted butter, add a pinch of salt) DIRECTIONS: 1. In a microwave-safe bowl, whisk together the sweetener, melted butter, lemon juice, lemon zest. Whisk in the eggs until well combined. 2. Cook in the microwave for one minute intervals, stirring after each minute until the mixture is thick enough to coat the back of a metal spoon. (Note: you may want to do 30 second intervals after the first 3 minutes to prevent curdling). 3. Strain the curd through fine-mesh strainer into a jar or small bowl. 4. The curd will thicken considerably as it cools. 5.
