I haven’t been here in forever...

Prompting my return is a short rant about reader-inserts.  As much as I love them and I love reading them, there’s just something irritating about their ad-lib nature.  

When I was learning to spell as a kid we went over homophones, for example your and you’re.  In my head, I actually taught myself to read words like you’re as “you are” regardless of how a writer uses them because it ensures I never make the mistake of using the wrong one.  If someone texts me “You’re cat is crazy,” I actually read it in my head as “You are cat is crazy.”  Some people wonder why I think they sound like idiots when they don’t use the right form of a word but to me they literally, in my head, sound like an idiot.

That being said, the most distracting thing about reader inserts for me is the use of things like (y/n) or (e/c) instead of just giving the character specific characteristics and a name.  It’s distracting because when I read it I actually read it as it is.  I just can’t insert something there and instead I end up reading “Hey, (y/n)!” as  “Hey, Your Name!”  It’s probably just because I trained myself in a crazy way to avoid slip-ups in grammar, but seriously I can’t be the only one who feels this way about reader-inserts.

Puddingz Sly Cooper Headcanon #3

3. Bentley is the team’s disguise guy.  He’s the one who either shops for or decides on the team’s disguises.  The only problem is that he’s terrible at picking out men’s clothing.  He thought that green looked good on Sly when they went to Holland when it actually looks terrible.  On the other hand, Bentley is amazing at picking out clothing for women.  Where his taste in men’s clothing is completely off, his taste in women’s clothing is dead on.  This is also the reason why Penelope suddenly drops the overalls for the hot track-suit in Thieves in Time.

Sly Cooper Headcanon #2

With the upcoming bar fight chapter, I thought it would be appropriate to introduce my headcanon about the “lemonade” bar.

2. Under any other rating, the Lemonade Bar would have just been called a bar.  Although it’s cute that they drink lemonade there, the intentions of the setup are still clear.  Under any other rating, they most likely would drink alcohol in the bar.  Calling it a lemonade bar and making the only beverage served there lemonade was a way to keep the rating down.  We all know what’s really gonig on there.

I really should be studying.

But I’m not!  I’m making some changes to my page to make it more navigable.  I will return to studying shortly.  I also wanted you all to know that I’m close to finishing the next chapter and soon the LEMON will be coming up.  I shall stay true to my penname!

On the same note, I will be making a series of posts describing stories that I’ve written and some future ideas.  These posts will be organized into my pages over time.

Just an update.

To the fans of To Break Something Stolen: 

Writing to let you guys know that I don’t think the next chapter will be out until the second week of May because school just got busy again.  Finals are coming up and of course all those papers are due (ah papers... the bane of my college existence.)  I promise a chapter by mid-May because I’ve already written quite a bit of it, but for now I have to focus on papers and finals.

If the Guru can telepathically transmit his thoughts, then can Maya do so as well with more training? It would be really cool if she could. It would make her pretty much perfect for infiltration, since she could communicate to the other team members without any electronics or other gear. Giving her that ability would open up so many possibilities! Also, it could make for some interesting scenes where she could accidentally use this ability before she is fully trained.

I don’t want to spoil too much of the next chapter (which I’m working on right now).  Maya has the potential for telepathic communication but has never practiced it so she cannot transmit thoughts to others yet but it may be something I have her do in the future.  I left her spiritual ability open to debate and to change in her character profile so that I could work with it a bit to make her more helpful to the gang as time moves on.  The Guru is certainly a prime candidate to teach her this particular ability and she’ll be exposed to it more than one time in the upcoming chapters, so chances are that her curiosity will get the better of her and it will be something she wants to learn.  Her spiritual training was limited because she didn’t have a lot of time to train, and most of their studies focused on her elemental power, so there’s a lot of room yet for expansion of those abilities, especially after the Guru joins the gang.  In the upcoming chapter, she will speak out loud while the Guru does his thing without realizing that she might be able to also transmit her thoughts.  

I guess this is the long-winded way of saying that, yes, she could telepathically transmit her thoughts with more training.  I like talking about my characters so I get a little excited when I get questions.

My Headcanons

So... I have some headcanons and one of them has to do with an upcoming chapter.  I will be introducing my headcanons when they are appropriate, and feel free to share some of your own with me whenever you like.

Puddingz Headcanon 1:

Sly, Bentley, and Murray can’t really understand the Guru’s mumbo-jumbo. The Guru is a powerful mystic and he can transmit his thoughts straight into the head of someone else.  The mumbling he does is just for appearances. He can transmit thoughts through the Binocucom because he’s using his staff to connect to the Binocucom system.

How good is Maya at manipulating and creating lightning? What is the extent of her abilities? It would be cool if Carmelita were to shoot her with her shock pistol and she would deflect it or shoot it back Yoda style. Also, a drawing of her shooting lightning would be nice.

At this point in the story, she’s only partially trained.  She left her master early to rejoin the Cooper Gang on their latest adventure.  I did have the idea that at some point in time she would be able to absorb, and even amplify, the shots from the shock pistol.  I’m not sure if that’s something she’ll be doing in this story or in the third installment.  I haven’t thought that far ahead.  The action just kind of happens the way it does… if you know what I mean.  

As for the extent of her abilities, she can produce a bit of electricity of her own, but most of her large scale attacks and abilities come from atmospheric electricity.  She either uses lightning that is already there or she calls charges down to her from the atmosphere.  She can also call electricity out of power lines, whether they’re above ground or underground, so she has a pretty consistent source of energy no matter where she is.  Her training was in a secluded place where artificial electricity wasn’t an option, so of course she’ll most likely go first to the surrounding charges in the atmosphere out of habit, but she can and will do either.  She can only create small, localized shocks with her own energy, like when she tazed Carmelita in Venice.

Directing lightning bolts and building electric cages will probably be her main use of lightning in this story, but lightning by itself is a powerful ally, especially when you can direct it wherever you want it.  As far as her targeting system, she can hit any object that she can see, but as you can imagine hitting things she can’t see is a bit more challenging.  She did some general spiritual training with her master because her lightning powers came with some simpler powers like sensing auras, and having what will be semi-telepathic abilities.  If it’s organic, she can hit it if she can sense it, so if it has an aura of some kind.  This targeting system is a bit foggier.  She’s not well-practiced at it, but she’s good enough to use it when needed.

Looking to the future, after the second game ends I believe I’m going to have her train again for a short amount of time.  Without spoiling too much, in the third installment I imagine she’ll be able to do just about anything with lightning if it can be done.  I imagine a sort of Avatar Firebender style of shooting lightning bolts at people.  Right now she’s more like Zuko.  She can’t really create her own lightning yet, but she can use what’s around her.

I’ll see what I can do about a picture.  I never thought of drawing her that way and to be honest I’m a bit rusty with drawing… I got lazy and I’ve only been drawing clothes for a while, but I’ll give it a shot.  With school going on and the homework I have, you might not get to see it for a while (like until May when school ends and I have some free time) but I’ll put it on my to-do list.
