Lena Luthor Week: Day 2 - Lena + One Color

Kara doesn’t have a favorite color. 

As an artist, she argues that she doesn’t need one: she loves and uses them equally, and its easier than trying to explain that none of them hold a candle to the colors she knew under Rao’s red sun. It’s not until she meets Lena that she thinks she might have one after all.

If asked, she might have cited the precise shade of pink on Lena’s lips, that night they sit on her office couch and speak of articles and family.

Or, a few months later, the deep green of Lena’s eyes, warm and content in the low lamplight as they relax on Kara’s sofa after movie night.

Then purple on Lena’s nails the day in the park. The polish shimmers in the midday sun when Lena reaches for her hand. 

Or the silver of Lena’s dress in the sparkle of the Christmas tree lights, when she beams with a bark of laughter upon unwrapping her very own ugly Christmas sweater.

“For next time,” Kara says, a spoken and unspoken promise that Lena’s friendship isn’t temporary-- that she’s here to stay.

She memorizes the blush that follows, ruddy with laughter and wine, which might too be a favorite color of Kara’s.

All these and more vie for the top slot, but then one morning, years later, Kara wakes up and finds herself entranced by the play of morning’s first light cascading over Lena’s bare shoulder. 

Lena rolls over, and smiles with sleep lingering in her eyes. Her gaze seems to glimmer in the early morning sun, illuminating her silhouette like one of the gilded manuscripts Kara studied in her university art class.

Mesmerized, a distant part of Kara’s brain recognizes that there is no single shade she could call her favorite, when her favorite color of all is that of Lena in the light.
