thank you for the lovely art!
“This seat taken?”
Dan glances up from his hunched position beside the train cart window. The boy before him is clearly older and shockingly pale- even for English standards. His hair is an unnatural black color which compliments his light features and brushes the tip of his cheekbone. Dan- not wanting to look like a total creep just staring at him -shrugs and looks over to the bench seat across from him.
“Does it look like there’s someone else sitting there?” The boy’s eyes widen, shoulders caving in further towards his body. Dan backtracks once he sees the boy take a step back, almost out of the door, “Shit, sorry, I really didn’t mean for that to sound so rude. It’s just that nobody usually sits with me on the ride to Hogwarts and I’ve had a long day already and-”
The boy chuckles, the panic that was there before disappeared when Dan started babbling, “It’s fine. Do you want me stay or do you want to sit here and brood by yourself?”
“I wasn’t brooding!” Dan squawks, sitting up straight and crossing his arms defensively.
“You totally were,” the boy pushes his case under the seat and settles down, toeing off his shoes to reveal mismatched socks and pulling his feet up onto the seat with a playful smirk tugging at his lips. He wiggles his toes and stretches his arms, almost like a cat who has found the perfect napping spot in the sun.
Dan chuckles at the odd student next to him, “Whatever, I just don’t want to go back to the school.” Dan mirrors him and splays out his legs across the seat with his back to the window, his shoulders tensing up at the thought of walking through the castle’s doors again and seeing who awaited him.
“Wait, why? Its supposed to be enjoyable- well, as enjoyable as school can be.”
Dan runs his fingers through his hair, lightly tugging on the strands as he thought of a way to explain his reasoning. He huffs a sigh and looks back outside to see the familiar scenery blur together as they rode the tracks. “I don’t know. It’s just that here’s nothing over there for me. I don’t have a clique to go back to once school starts. And it’s not that I’m lonely, it’s that some people think it’s weird. And when something is weird they don’t like it and, well, ya know.” Dan ends lamely.
The boy across from him study’s him for a moment before standing up, making his way to Dan and pushing himself between his legs with his legs crossed. Dan’s face flushes and he instinctively pulls his legs towards his body, only to be stopped by hands on his kneecaps. The boy looks him in the eye with a kind smile on his face.
“Look, nothing is wrong with being weird. It’s actually for the best that you’re weird- it’s a guarantee that your life is interesting. Normalness leads to sadness. That there’s something more to you than what you show,” Dan can’t look away from the complete stranger in front of him; the complete stranger who seems to know how to ease his thoughts in a few sentences.
“I remember my first day of school: imagine a ginger boy functioning on only a few hours of sleep. His brother had just abandoned him in the giant magical school and he looks like an utter idiot. Nobody is gonna choose to sit with him, right?”
“Well-”
“That was rhetorical. Don’t answer that, smart-ass,” Dan can’t help but laugh at the deadpan look the boy gives him, “Anyways, I never really made a group either, but you know what? It’s never too late to make friends. You’ll find someone who you connect with.”
Dan glances down to where the boy’s hands are still cupping his knees comfortingly, thumbs moving in circles as he talks. He moves his hand to tentatively touch the other’s, playing with his fingers and slowly moving down to the bracelets wrapped around his wrist. The two sit in silence for a moment, taking in the atmosphere.
Dan finally speaks up, “What house are you in?”
“Hufflepuff.”
Dan stifles his laughter before commenting, his hand holding up the boy’s, “You know, your hands look perfect for making sandwiches.”
The elder stares down at him, taking his hands back and leaning away from his giggling friend. He uncurls one of his legs and kicks Dan in the thigh, “Wouldn’t you like to know what these hands can do.”
Dan’s laughter comes to a halt as he looks up at the boy with a dirty grin on his face. The other seems to realize what he said and punches Dan in the arm, his pale face flushing brightly. “Shut up! I meant punching you.”
“I mean…”
The boy let’s out a frustrated noise somewhere between a cat being strangled and a wheezing grandfather before flopping on top of Dan, leaning all of his weight on him. Dan laughs and tries to push him away, his face full of black hair that brushes the tip of his nose. The two struggle for a moment, borderline wrestling, before they settle into a comfortable position with the boy lying down on his stomach between Dan’s thighs. Their breaths sync up and Dan leans his head against the cool glass of the window, seeing that they are only a few miles away from the school.
The boy in Dan’s lap pipes up, propping his chin on Dan’s chest, “I never caught your name.”
Dan smiles, noticing just how pretty he was with his big blue puppy-eyes that make the boy seem younger, “Well, that’s pretty important, isn’t it? The name’s Dan.”
“Phil.”
“Did I ask?”
“Shut up, smart-ass.”
