Raph's the big brother. The protector. The shield. He'll do anything to keep his little brothers from getting hurt. He never considered that trying to protect them could also get them hurt in the first place.
COME GET Y’ALL’S JUICE IT’S FINALLY DONE!!!!!
Hey so I'm going through it today and in order to feel better I'll be making an angsty short fic centering ofc leonardo from the 2003 tmnt where hurt him just to feel smth. I used the febwhump prompt for inspiration and changed it from *breaking down in the shower* to *breaking down in the rain on a rooftop*. Anyway here i go:
It's three am in New York city and the streets are almost bare of people. The few that are around scramble to find cover from the heavy rain as the cars splash them without remorse and drive away.
The tip tap of the rain doesn't cover the angry traffic honks, it does however suffocate the sound of running and the curtain of rain masks the figure on the rooftops of Manhattan.
Leonardo is running in the rain, he calls it morning run, his brothers call it "doing his leo thing". Regardless he's running and his thoughts are collected. When he went out the rain was only a drizzle, now it's a shower, a colder one compared to the one he's gonna take at home. He jumps over the space between two buildings and lands perfectly steady on the rooftop, which is somewhat slippery from the rain but he's past the point in which that kind of thing would make him loose his footing.
His mind conjures a memory of when he tried such an action for the first time and almost broke his neck, he smiles to himself slightly embarrassed at the memory, Mikey made fun of him for weeks; "Perfect Leonardo's secret weakness is wet floors".
He runs up a fire escape to reach the top of the next building he's going to jump off from. That sentence would be worrisome if it was about anyone else but a trained ninja. He starts running on the roof of the large building, it's very high up here, he doesn't mind but he notices.
As he runs to the other side of the roof thunder claps loudly somewhere behind him. He doesn't care but he notices. He also notices that he's alone, it's three am, it's raining and he's running on the rooftops. His brain works it's magic and brings up not the most pleasant memory. His heart jumps to his throat when he thinks he hears footsteps that aren't his. He stops running, more than halfway through the rooftop. When he turns around there's nothing, he can't feel anyone's presence, doesn't hear anything.
He turns, taking a deep breath to clear his head and inhales some water too from the rain. The rain, right, that's what makes the noise that sounds like footsteps sometimes. He runs.
He can't run from his thoughts though, those always catch up to him. He makes the jump over a particularly large gap between buildings and lands in a roll to minimise damage.
He lands in a roll and then rolls again this time away from a sword that lands inches away from where his leg was-
He gets up and keeps running and they chase bu he's faster- and the rain drowns his heavy breathing and his thoughts drown reality for just a few moments.
He's turned it into a game at this point, the "can leo outrun the imaginary Foot soldiers chasing him?" game. Number of players required: only one but they need to have a fucked up brain.
He huffs a laugh and dodges what would have been a very effective attempt at stabbing him through the neck had he not been faster and had the blade not been made up.
He wonders if he would notice if an actual Foot squad were to follow and attack him like the good old days. He would probably notice but it would make little difference.
Well to be fair the Foot did leave them alone after he beat Karai one on one and threatened to chop her head off if she ever came for them again. That woman just couldn't take a hint like a normal person.
He's almost at the end of his run. He will have to turn back home soon, take a shower, drink some tea to warm up, and if the ancestors are merciful Mikey will not have eaten his leftovers from yesterday so he'll have that too.
He runs and notices that the rain is not getting any lighter but he doesn't really mind. Until thunder cracks and he's running and the rain is cold and his lungs burn but he can't stop running because they're right behind him, he can't stop now he can't, he's leading them straight to April's he needs to change route he'll put them all in danger, he's behind him and the lightning reflects on his gauntlet as it comes down on him and his shoulder burns but he didn't get hit why does his shoulder burn, there's liquid running down his shoulder, it's probably blood, he's been hit, but no he hasn't, he wasn't hit there last time, he was-
Thunder cracks and he realizes he's not running actually. He's frozen in place, his breathing is laboured, some of his muscles tremble, from the cold, he tells himself.
He looks around, he's on top of his destination, the roof where his run is supposed to end and he's supposed to run back home.
Lighting splits the sky in two and his knees drop to the ground. His breathing hasn't calmed down even though he's stopped running. He hates this part. Thunder cracks in the sky but he feels it inside of his scull. His shoulder burns and that irritates the fuck out of him.
"That's the wrong injury you stupid fucking brain, at least give me the right flashbacks if you're going to be a dick". His shoulder burns again he notices, maybe as a "fuck you" or maybe as a "sorry this is all i have", and Leo doesn't care.
He's going to get up now, he's going to get up and get his ass home and take a long scalding shower and give his shoulder a good reason to burn. He's going to, now.
Thunder cracks as his stomach turns upside down and he almost throws up. He chides himself for almost throwing up after a mere morning run like an amateur. No he's not ignoring the actual reason thank you very much. He sits in a meditation position and regulates his breathing slowly. The rain sliding down his face is warm all of a sudden ah no those are tears, fantastic.
He almost punches the rooftop floor from the sheer embarrassment but stops himself from being even more embarrassing and continues to work on his breathing.
It takes too many minutes (in his humble opinion) to stop shuddering when thunder cracks but he gets there eventually and his breathing evens out. He gets up, it works this time, and he smiles in relief.
He doesn't have the courage to start running again though, afraid he'll trigger something else and will end up on some other rooftop in a worse state than this.
Oh well, he has to get home somehow and he would rather eat shell wax than call someone to come and get him. Why? His very nice and helpful mind inquiries as if it doesn't have the answer already. Because it's been almost two years since it happened, his injuries are long healed and none of it affects him when he's actually in danger. Because he's supposed to be over it already. Because he went to the Ancient One and came to terms with his failure and his fears and overcame them. Because he just can't god fucking damn it leave him alone.
He starts running, to hell with the thunder and with the rain and with his stupid fucking shoulder. He runs. Nothing happens until he's about two blocks away from home. He jumps from one building to the other, doesn't slip, doesn't trip, doesn't freeze again.
The rain is now stopping as he gets closer to home, he's shivering and he can't feel his feet and his breathing is laboured, oh fuck. He tries to power through it but his legs feel like they're a part of the rooftop.
He wants to scream so so bad, and maybe break some bricks and stab something even, too bad the rain is not heavy enough to cover his screaming anymore, missed a good opportunity there, and there's nothing around to stab. So he settles for breaking part of the rooftop border with his heel. He hiccups a sob and this time he can't mistake the tears for rain... Aaaand he's crying again,.ladies and gentlemen, what a rare sight, twice in one day?! Next Donnie will tell him they won the lottery.
He laughs, doesn't know if it's at his sorry state or at his even more sorry attempt at humor, but he laughs anyway and it makes him feel a little better. He takes a deep breath, slaps his own cheeks with slightly more force than one might deem necessary and tells himself to knock it off.
Look at him, regulating his emotions and shit, soon he might even be able to sleep alone and eat solid foods like big boy. He gives up on the run and decides to just walk back home using the sewers directly. It doesn't help much with the shivering but it helps with making his stomach go back to it's place, in the middle of his body instead of at the base of his throat.
The sewers are pretty flooded, there's a deafening sound of water but it's nowhere similar to the rain, quite the opposite actually, it's very soothing.
He reaches the lair eventually, enters the code at the entrance and heads straight for the kitchen. His leftovers are still there and he almost starts crying again. Leaving the kitchen he sees Donnie's lab light is on from under the door, Mikey and Raph are fighting over who gets to use the broken controller (Donnie refused to fix it after the third accident in a week) and Splinters presence feels calm and quiet so he must be asleep or in meditation.
Mikey looks up when he passes the couch on his way to the bathroom to shower and starts waving him over until he notices he is completely drenched. "Woah bro why do you look like a sad wet puppy in a movie!" Thank you Michelangelo for the very specific comparison. "It was raining a lot" he replies, and almost face palms at how hoarse he sounds almost as if he'd been crying or something.
"Damn, go take a hot shower dude your voice is showing the first signs of a cold" this time it's Raph that joins in. Leo nods and walks to the bathroom saying "yeah was looking forward to it".
After a good 20 minutes under the hottest setting his skin can handle without actually getting second degree burns he exits the shower. His shoulder doesn't burn anymore, or maybe he just doesn't notice it anymore with how tender and raw everything feels.
Once dried and out of the bathroom he heads for the kitchen again to get those leftovers and enjoy them and the plate is nowhere to be found. Ok he's actually going to commit fratricide.
He leaves the kitchen for the TV area, ready to rip mikey a new one before locking himself in his room and crying over fucking Leftovers. His plate is sitting on the small table though, his food intact, slightly steaming, theres a weighted blanket and the couch is empty. Donnie is sitting on the sofa reading, he doesn't even look up at him.
He hesitates for a few seconds, then throws the blanket on his shoulders, takes the plate and sits tucking his feet under him and watches some documentary until he falls asleep and Donnie gets up to remove the plate from his lap. He notices he didn't even eat the leftovers but he doesn't care.
Story Summary: Something’s wrong with Splinter. There has to be. Why else does he seem to take delight in tormenting his son? Unless there’s something terribly, terribly wrong with Leo. Bad son, bad brother, useless, worthless. Maybe Dad’s right. Maybe he deserves it.
