Le martyre de Saint-Denis de Leon Bonnat
Léon Bonnat (1833 – 1922) was a French painter, art collector, and professor of painting. He grew up in his father's book shop, with engravings of the old master paintings. In the 1880s Bonnat lived in Paris and was quite popular with American students studying there. In addition to his native French, he spoke Spanish and Italian and knew English well, to the relief of many monolingual Americans.
