Family Dialogue Prompts
“You’ve got to eat, Sakazaki.”
The words take the shape of a command more than an invitation. In any other instance, the fact would make Yuuya laugh.
As it is, they only serve to make him sick.
“Ah, I’ll pass, mon ami,” he says, his winning smile stretched thin and strained. Shit, he’s tired. He’s trying so hard, but he’s also so tired. “I’ve got to get my figure back, if I want to return to the field as charming as ever.”
Predictably, Leone isn’t fooled. He’s looking at Yuuya like he’s still thirteen and an idiot, an unimpressed look on his face, that damn bowl of food in his hands.
“You’re not going back to work until you’ve been cleared for it,” he replies, flatly. “Which you won’t be anytime soon, at this rate, because- one, I’ve made sure no one will bribe the medical staff to speed things up, and two, you’re skin and bone.”
“I would not go that far-”
“Sakazaki.”
Yuuya winces. It’s not fear: he hasn’t been afraid of Leone in a long, long time, even at his worst, even at their worst. But he recognizes the finality in that tone, and he knows there will be no arguing with it, no winning this discussion except by emptying that bowl.
Except he can’t. The smell of food alone is enough for the nausea to climb back up his throat, filling his mouth with a dreadful taste that threatens to bring anything he eats right up the way it came from. He doesn’t want it to happen, he’d love nothing more than to comply and be done with it, and maybe return to his job a little quicker than planned, but it appears his stomach isn’t listening to anything his brain says.
Well, Yuuya amends quickly, in the privacy of his own thoughts, that’s not entirely a bad thing. He’d stop listening to his brain, too, if he had the option, given that said brain seems intent on replaying Dr. Iwamine’s words, and his sickening touches, and his cold smiles over and over and over again. It doesn’t matter if it’s day or it’s night, if he’s awake or dreaming - the doctor’s ghost will always be there, sitting in a corner of his mind, saying he needs to be well-fed, wondering how long it’ll take for him to be ripe and juicy for Hiyoko’s Christmas roast.
Yuuya’s hands are shaking again. Crap. He wills himself to stop, because the last thing he wants is to show how weak he has become, but it’s no use; his entire body is betraying him, and the underground facility he’s recently been rescued from is only in part to blame for it. Maybe he is, in fact, unfit to return to the field, and he’ll have to spend the rest of his days confined behind some desk or with a bullet planted between his eyes. Maybe-
A bigger, rougher hand settles upon his, and for a second, everything goes quiet. The boy looks up in surprise, only to find Leone staring at him in silence - to near everybirdie, the older agent’s expression would be unreadable, but Yuuya has been around him for long enough to be able to decipher the subtle shifts of it, the way his eyes soften even as his lips remain pressed tightly together.
“Sakazaki,” he says, barely audible. “Yuuya. Stop.”
Yuuya sucks in a shuddering breath, bowing his head in shame. He wants to escape this conversation now, but the thought of tearing himself away from the physical contact is almost unbearable, and besides, none of his usual witticisms are coming to mind at the moment.
And still, Leone keeps talking, his voice never straining, never changing inflections. “Listen to me- it’s over. You’re safe. Iwamine won’t come near you ever again. If he tries to, I will doom this mission myself and shoot him in the head before he succeeds. You have my word on it.
“Now eat your dinner. You need the energy, and I need my junior agent covering my back. And this is an order, so I won’t accept a refusal from you. Do you understand?”
Yuuya nods. What else can he do? It’s an ingrained response, at this point. He only half believes it, honestly, but it seems to be the only logical reaction to have.
And yet, despite all of this, his left hand still clings to Leone’s fingers; and with the other one, meanwhile, he finds himself picking up the spoon.
