ghost/living person au

At first Annie thinks it’s her imagination, that she is dreaming the movements flitting in and out of her peripheral, disappearing the moment she whips her head around to spot its source. She wonders at first if it’s her family playing tricks on her, or trying to catch her attention over the blasting music of her headphones, constantly plugged into her ears. She even checks to see if she needs glasses.

It’s only when she’s home alone, the house’s quiet disturbed by the music playing from her phone, that she realizes that there is something in the house.

She wonders if she’s hallucinating the figure that seems to drift at her side. She refuses to turn her head, fearing that it will disappear again. Or that it’s something hideous, something that had come to pray on her soul. The latter thought rattles in her mind.

She stays perfectly still, muscles going rigid, shivers climbing up her spine, the hallway overcome with a chilling draft. Her mind wanders to the realtor’s concerns, months before they had moved in, talking about rumours that the house was occupied by a sort of spirit. Her mother had dismissed them as petty gossip, voicing daily the myths surrounding the supernatural. 

Annie could just about kill her mother right about now.

The figure, or ghost, or whatever it is doesn’t move, only stands by her side, a mere presence. Her eyes strain to make out the details, the tall, masculine figure, facial features distorted. She thinks she can make out a beak-like nose, smaller than hers.

She eyes start to burn, and she’s force to turn to face it. Him.

It takes a moment for the figure to disappear, a moment where she can make out its white silhouette before it flits out of her vision. 

He’s shy, she thinks.

But at least he isn’t dangerous.
