This is so similar in many ways to us as humans! Our animal family is so much like us - they find mates, they have kids, they have to feed themselves and their families. If we can find a way to believe they think, feel and have emotions, we need to treat them better and find a way to ensure their future on this planet. They are a vital part of the ecosystems in which they live. The health of animals, humans and the environment are all inextricably linked together. Did you know that female big cats are philopatric? Which means that daughters stay near the area where they were born and take a piece of moms home range? That being said they have very low tolerance for each other and are fiercely territorial. If you were to look at the savanna where leopards live from a birds eye view you would see that leopard females live in what you call a matrilineal kin cluster - it’s a cluster of females that are largely all related! Moms, aunts, daughters and sisters. The San Diego Zoo has achieved another milestone this spring, after Amur leopard, Satka, (pronounced Saat Ka) gave birth to two cubs—the first time Amur leopard cubs have been born at the Zoo since the rare species first arrived in 2011. The cubs were born April 5th and are now spending more time outside of their den and in public view. Over the past few weeks, Satka has been introducing the young ones to their habitat, slowly allowing them to explore, climb and play, before corralling them into the den for feedings or to rest. Animal care staff said that so far, they haven’t had much contact with the cubs.
