Leptotes bicolor. Tiny orchid.
Plant of the Day
Friday 26 April 2019
This small, epiphytic orchid, Leptotes bicolor, is native to Brazil and Paraguay. It was part of an awarding winning display by Writhlington School Orchid Project, Somerset, for the Royal Horticultural Society Orchid Show in London, UK. This enterprise project is run by Writhlington School and Mendip Studio School pupils based around the laboratory propagation of orchids from seed, and cultivation of those plants in a school glasshouse. They specialise in the conservation of endangered species.

Leptotes unicolor - como fiquei feliz de encontrar essa mini orquídea em seu ambiente natural! A floração dura apenas 5 dias durante as estações de outono e inverno! Linda! #flower #orchid #orchids #leptotes #nature #naturelovers #flor #beautiful
Just a little note on those two orchids btw. Acianthera crinita in the first photo is considered a micro orchid, as my interest suggests it's native to Brazil's eastern rainforests (Atlantic Forest, Amazon sister forest biome). It produces a bunch of flowers by leaf and they have an external fuzziness to them, but no flower at sight yet.
The second one though is a Leptotes pauloensis, also native and relative to the Cattleyas group. I'm in love with all this moss over the branch segment it is rooted in. We have a liverwort over a moss species, couldn't identify them, but I hope to keep them growing together as they protect the Leptotes' roots from drying up and may provide beneficial microbacterial life.

Update on Leptotes bicolor. It spiked from one of the sheaths that were on it when I bought it. Only one flower and it lasted maybe a week and a half. Wasn't really fragrant. It's pretty but have to say I'm pretty disappointed. It finished one set of new growths from each direction, and is now half way on the second and starting a third set.

New orchid from JL Orchids' display at the society meeting. Have been eyeing this guy for a while. Came in a cute little clay pot, but I think I hate clay pots because they dry too fast. Although... I think these guys are supposed to dry out between watering bc it's a cattleya type? Also, it's my first cattleya type! It's bloomed 5 times in the past, and it has three new spikes (at least that's what they told me). It was 25 bucks so not too bad. It looks like string beans
