Cosmic Slumber Tarot - Tillie Walden
O’Hooley & Tidow
Belinda O’Hooley and Heidi Tidow comprise this English wife-and-wife folk duo, with seven albums to their name. They have an unusual piano-based folk sound, and their music shines a light on the ordinary, the common, and the marginalized.
Small, Big Love (2016) was written for O'Hooley and Tidow by Kathryn Williams, who performed it at their wedding.
Coil and Spring (2014) was "Inspired by Pussy Riot's stand against Putin, the church and the state." While not explicitly wlw, I had to include it for the raw power of the ending.
The Needle & The Hand (2016) is a poignant, experimental song about Tidow's troubled childhood and tattoos as healing empowerment. I bet we can guess who is meant by the reference to "generous, healing, tender love"!
Winter Folk Carol (2017) is a darker take on the classic Christmas carol, stating "family could be one good friend/and no one having to pretend".
And the one you're most likely to have heard: Gentleman Jack (2012) is about historical lesbian gentlewoman Anne Lister, who, like the duo, lived in Yorkshire. Years after its release, the song become well known as the closing credits of the TV show by the same name--a show we also greatly enjoyed, and which is coming back for a second season later this month!
O'Hooley and Tidow live in Golcar, West Yorkshire, with their young son, Flynn. Both O'Hooley and Tidow are autistic and involved in advocacy for autistic women and those who are diagnosed as adults. You can find out more about them on their website, or on twitter, bandcamp, and instagram.
