i’ve seen the “saul has elevator music in his head at all times“ trope a lot and am dying for a fic (by someone, ANYONE) where farah reads his mind and just hears elevator music. 😂
Well, I do have some time for a mini-fic!!
End of semester faculty meetings are always the absolute worst. And as much as Farah loves her fellow professors, regarding them as something close to family, at the end of several hours of bureaucratic process she finds herself wanting to wring them by the neck and toss them out into the cold.
All because Griselda had suggested pushing their allotted time for lunch back by several hours, in the name of efficiency. Farah’s spent several years as Headmistress at this point and she still has no good reason as to why she lets her own faculty bully her like this.
She glances across the room at Saul who is looking at Griselda intently. The first thing she realizes is precisely how odd that is. Griselda’s presentation on the various disciplinary actions taken against students that semester - which should theoretically hold promise as one of the more interesting presentations - is notoriously the most boring. Griselda’s monotone has been drumming inside of Farah’s head for the past several minutes. Ben had slipped her an Advil but she’s still waiting for it to kick in.
Another look around the room shows that the rest of the faculty have long checked out of the presentation. She’s pretty certain that Professor Wizgiz has fallen asleep; soft snores are indeed coming from that side of the room. And the leprechaun has pulled his hat over his eyes.
This is all precisely why Farah cannot understand the rapt attention that Saul is paying to the presentation. He certainly hadn’t paid that much attention to her opening remarks. Instead choosing to construct a paper plane out of the itinerary and fly it directly into Ben’s head, prompting a reminder from Farah that ‘this is a place of business’.
She had made a promise long ago that she would never read the minds of her friends. But she figures that one quick peek into Saul’s head cannot possibly hurt. Exhaling slowly, she lets the tendrils of her magic cross the room until they meet Saul. She closes her eyes slightly so that she can concentrate on his thoughts, promising that she’ll leave immediately if it’s anything untoward.
Elevator music. There is elevator music playing in Saul’s head. Farah is not aware that such a thing was even possible. She concentrates harder, surely she must be missing something. But the harder she concentrates, the louder it gets. She pulls out of his mind with a start and a newfound concern for her friend.
After the meeting, Farah makes her way over to Saul, a pressing question in mind. “Saul, why was there elevator music playing in your head when Griselda was presenting?”
Saul raises an eyebrow, he knows his friend better than to question why she was poking around in his mind in the first place; he knows she’d only do it if she felt she had good reason. “Well, I prefer to call it call-hold music. It’s a trick I learned when I don’t want you pesky mind fairies knowing what I’m actually thinking about.”
Farah lightly smacks him on the arm at the faux-insult. “So, what were you really thinking about?”
“Geese.”
“Geese.” Farah sounds out the word as though it is the first time is passing through her lips.
“The ones that live at the pond were rather mean to me today. They tried to grab ahold of my breakfast and when I politely told them no, they decided the only way to appease that insult was to hunt me for sport.”
Farah fights against the laugh threatening to burst free. “Saul, are you well?”
Saul takes a minute. “It’s possible the geese may have nipped at my ankles causing me to fall over and hit my head. In my defense, all the snow made everything slippery.”
Farah sighs, though not unkindly. “Do you need to go to the nurse’s office?”

Oooh okay!
Things about me:
1) I have a pathological fear of spiders. I have been known to phone other people in the house to rescue me if there is one in my vicinity.
2) I once had the keys to a relatively large zoo and have a near endless array of animal stories.
3) I actually just got married! 👰🏻❤️👰🏻
4) My wife is entirely to blame for getting me on tumblr and into writing fic, let alone for introducing me to the idea of Casey / Alex.
5) I desperately wish they would bring back chewy irn bru bars. I have been craving them for months but they haven't been made for years and there is nothing else out there that is as sweet and sour and could glue your molars together so effectively.
