TV Show: Steven Universe

I love them because: I get very excited when I see LBGTI+ representation in children’s television, but this one is particularly special. You don’t get to see them often, but when you do Ruby and Sapphire melt your heart. Steven Universe is an incredibly progressive cartoon that, among many things, questions gender, family structure and sexuality, whilst encouraging body-positivity, consent, love and being yourself. The relationship between Ruby and Sapphire is innocent, tender and everlasting. These two forbidden lovers are so deeply connected that there is only one way for them to live their lives, fused together to form Garnet.

Korra and Asami

TV Show: Legend of Korra

I love them because: Korra and Asami spent a lot of time together in the Legend of Korra. So much so that it led some fans to believe that they were possibly in love. The series ended suggestively and several days after the finale’s release the co-creators of the show announced that Korra and Asami were in fact a couple. Even though their relationship is subtle and at times platonic, it is a nice step in the right direction towards open and positive representation for LGBTI+ youth.
