in which isak is less of a mess than usual (LIE), even is super cool and smooth (LIE), and mikael just wants everyone to be happy (TRUTH).

Notes and ramblings:

A really interesting spin on a childhood friends AU in which Mikael and Isak have known each other since they were children and Even meets Isak when Mikael tries to set them up together

I love the prominence Mikael takes in this fic, his role feels nicely fleshed out and despite the fact that these two characters have never technically had an onscreen conversation their friendship feels incredibly well-characterized

The lighthearted tone this fic takes on is really lovely, it feels realistic but is also just such a joy to read

I love Even and Isak’s relationship in this! They fall together so easily just like in canon and the way they understand each other without really needing to say much again makes so much sense for these two

And the writing in this is just so gorgeous, with this easy sort of flow to it that just pulls you along for the ride

Favorite lines:

Smoke from the joint that both of them have forgotten about is stroking tendrils through the air and Even is pushing back into Isak’s hand and they’re at a crossroads, everything in the world slowing down and focusing on them, and then Even screws his eyes closed and presses a kiss into Isak that is full of pain and gratitude and Isak doesn’t quite understand but he accepts it anyways.

That’s the moment when Isak knows there’s no going back. They’re sharing secrets and Even’s lips taste like weed and tears and backstory and Isak is trying to hold onto him as hard as possible and this isn’t what friends do. This is bigger; this takes up all of Isak’s sight and redirects his orbit and this summer, he realizes, is changing his life. Right now, in this minute, his life is being changed. And he doesn’t know if it’s being changed for the better or for the worse but he can’t quite bring himself to care too much so he just relaxes into Even’s touch and that’s it.

Mariah @bethxchilds The next billuminati member that might have been one of my first real friends in the discord chat. even and mikael navigate the new territory of their friendship together

Notes and ramblings:

This is a really lovely exploration of Even and Mikael’s friendship as they reconnect after all the drama of season 4

I love the care and thought that has gone into this portrayal of that relationship, it feels like so much is conveyed with just a few words about the depth of the history between them and the fragility of things but also the way they’re slowly and surely healing together

And this fic also makes great use of the unspoken, there’s so much of it but it’s mostly because they don’t need to say it, such is the nature of their relationship

Some really lovely stuff about nonbinary Mikael and exploring gender identity too, just so heartfelt and natural feeling

Shoutout for a great portrayal of balloon squad, as well! A sweet read that more than does justice to this iconic friendship!

Favorite lines:

“I don’t know why I’m nervous,” he murmurs, mostly to himself.

Mikael answers anyways. “Because it’s different,” he says matter-of-factly. “And it’s not a big deal to a lot of people, but it’s a big deal to us.”

the one where Even is extra - bbyfruit / @lesbovilde (2k words)

in which even tries way too hard, isak is just trying to deliver some damn pizza, and the balloon squad are best bros.

Notes & Ramblings:

This is an alternate first meeting where Isak is a pizza delivery boy and, consequently, Even eats way too much pizza. It’s a very fitting adaptation from a Friends episode, with a silly plot full of non-sequiturs, friendly teasing and physical comedy.

Even is completely, desperately extra here, and the Balloon Squad are perfect as the Friends, offering support, heckling and jokes.

Honestly, I laugh out loud every time I read this fic, which is an embarrassing number of times. This is my go-to fic for fluffy humor.  

Favorite Lines:

“Relax,” Mikael says, waving their hand in the air. “He’s not my type. I like that other pizza boy, you know? The hot one with the fluffy hair and the eyebrows, you know, the one who wears shirts with Marxist slogans to work.”

Everyone erupts into bickering, a weird mixture of debate about performative activism, survival in a capitalist society, and the validity of pineapple on pizza.

When the doorbell rings, however, Even stops talking and flings himself off of the couch, hitting the edge of the table again, another bruise probably blooming on his knee, and this boy better fucking love him, because he is suffering , damn it.

He throws open the door with one hand on the doorknob and his other hand leaning on the frame, nice and casual, just chilling, smooth as fuck.

“Hey,” he says, ignoring his friends cracking up behind him.

Friday Fic Recs - Week 4

Hey y’all, Sarah here! So uh it’s not technically Friday where i am anymore lol oops but like it’s Friday somewhere in the world still, right? So here are some fics you should check out! If you find something you like be sure to give it some kudos/comments love! <3

An Eternal Golden Braid - Asia117 / @nooradeservedbetter (Even/Isak; 9k word series; Isak is trans)

A really lovely imagining of what Isak’s story would look like if he was trans

The intersection of Isak’s identity as gay and trans is really, really well-explored and gorgeously drawn out

I really love Isak and Sonja’s relationship in this fic, it’s very well-drawn and in character but also feels quite unique to the verse since they’re bonding over very specific experiences

I love that you get these short glimpses into Isak and Even’s relationship but they feel so devastatingly them

Supportive boy squad is the most lovely thing in the universe

Dreamers Stay Dreaming - bbyfruit / @lesbovilde (Even/Isak; WIP; future fic)

An exploration of what Isak and Even’s life would be like somewhere in the future, when they’re married and raising a child together

I’m gonna be honest I’m not usually a huge fan of future fics but i am absolutely in love with this one, it feels so realistic and so, so true to these characters

Isak’s headspace is really well done!! He feels exactly like how i might imagine him a few years down the line, like you can tell he’s in a much more stable and happy place in his life but the insecurities he still have feel very realistic

The relationship between Isak and Even is incredibly well characterized, i love their deep familiarity with each other that again feels so true to how they would be in the future

Bonus for some very quality long distance relationship shenanigans which is imo one of the most underrated plot devices in fic [Even and Isak being cute and pining over Skype! Be still my heart!!]

all i ever do is think about us - Joana789 / @sanasbakkcush (Eva/Vilde; 2k words; Vilde character study)

A gem of a fic that gets into Vilde’s headspace astoundingly, devastatingly well, exploring her relationships and role in canon that feels spot on

This fic takes a lot of things that canon kind of hints at and fleshes them out fully, while keeping Vilde entirely in character

I especially love the way the fic handles her insecurities; they’re so pervasive in her thoughts, present in every aspect of her life, but ingrained, inherent in the way she thinks and perceives the world, which i think is so well done

The writing style is absolutely gorgeous, so immersive and poetic

comes with a powerful ending that legitimately left me breathless

cracks in our foundation by kittpurrson / @towonderland72 (Even/Isak; 5k words; friends to lovers/uni AU)

AU where the boys met in London, Even is a photographer, and Isak is a volunteer model in one of his photoshoots

The writing style is really gorgeous and fits the story beautifully, i love how minimalistic and stark it is

Does some really interesting, powerful things with disjointed timelines, juxtaposing present and past scenes in a poignant way

Isak’s headspace is astonishingly well-done, exploring a lot of notions of masculinity and sexuality that felt really in character for him and kind of left me aching

Has an absolutely gorgeous payoff at the end, so well constructed and the build up to it was entirely believable
