Who will be Fashion’s Future Leaders?

Here's the #WisdomWednesday entry for this week, an excerpt from a response I wrote for another class last Fall. Fashion is in need of leaders to increase transparency, but few are willing to make the leap.

Along with so many other industries, apparel production is facing the need for systemic change and cross-sector collaboration. They are still dealing with a complex supply chain spanning the globe, and they are suffering from ever-widening “social and ecological imbalances created by this globalization,” (Senge et al.)

And because this complex problem exists worldwide, as so many others do, and it is outside of many geographic and other linear boundaries it is unlikely that governments alone will resolve the many issues – including the destruction of ecosystems, water waste, and contamination, embedded poverty and impacts on climate change – caused by fashion. 

One of our readings asked, Collaborating for Systemic Change: “What is the right balance between private interest and public knowledge?” Conscious consumers have been calling for transparency in the apparel and fashion industry for several years now, but only meager efforts have surfaced. So many companies do not wish to share their information for varied reasons, including their intense competition with each other and the obvious hesitation to share profit margins and sources.

What if an unbiased entity came forward to “create clarity without denying the complexity” of the challenges still faced by the textile, fashion, and apparel industries? Patagonia and Nike have been making interesting changes, and they are steps ahead of the industry, but for some reason, they are not leading change because for the most part others fear following suit. Who will be fashion’s Mandela, able to bring forth collective leadership and effective systems change?
