I avow that I would be in despair not to campaign with you. One does not easily renounce the sweet habits that one has formed, still less one's desires; and, coming to war anew, I had counted on a great deal of pleasure in finding ourselves together on the same battlefield. Count Belliard must still be the same for me, because I have always felt the same heart for him.

‘Yesterday Pollie and I did not get up until 10am, so they made a terrible choice when we did land down. Today I thought I would show them that we could get up, so here I am writing before 8 o’clock. I have also been round all the rooms and filled up the boots with paper. It will be a great joke when the people go to put their boots on. Wish I had another week it is a fine place to stay.’

My dearest, this last separation seems to me even more unbearable than the others. You were so good, so perfect to me in those last moments, that your kindness brought me to tears and still fills me with affection. I confess that when you do justice to my true feelings for you, I am the happiest of women, believe me, my happiness, the happiness of my whole life, consists only in the joy of the father of my children, he whom I look upon as my dearest friend.
