Warnings: mentions of anxiety and self-deprecation
This is my piece for Leviathan's birthday collaboration this year; I chose the prompt wedding. I feel this isn't my best work, but there was a lot going on. I'm really glad I could meet the deadline and take part in this project! I had a great time and am honored to work alongside such talented people.
Happy birthday, Leviachan 🥳✨
As always, I apologize for any spelling or grammatical errors that may have gone unnoticed. Thank you to those who take the time to read and comment on my work; it’s greatly appreciated ♥
The silence is suffocating, allowing Leviathan’s thoughts to wander and find their voice. Normally, he sought it out, relishing the peace of mind the quiet brought him, the Avatar of Envy content to confine himself to his room and keep to the shadows. Here he feels alone and exposed, his soul laid bare before him in the vanity mirror. His reflection peers nervously back at him, wide-eyed and pale, as uncertainty takes hold and ties itself into knots in the pit of his stomach. He sighs, dropping his gaze to his hands, which tremble in his lap. You love him, and he loves you—this he knows—though doubt sows itself into his heart. What if this is a mistake—if you’ve yet to realize you deserve better? He can’t bear to see you unhappy.
“Yo, Levi!” The door swings open, and Leviathan jumps, yelping in surprise. “The Great Mammon is here to support his lil bro on his big day!” Mammon grins, while an unamused Lucifer trails behind him, scowling.
Leviathan glowers at the Avatar of Greed, feigning annoyance, but he can’t deny he’s relieved, their presence familiar and comforting, soothing his frayed nerves—it’s embarrassing. Mammon’s voice alone is loud enough to drown out his thoughts, and he gives Leviathan little time to think when he wraps an arm around the third born’s shoulders and playfully ruffles his hair.
“Don’t say I never did anythin for ya!” he crows.
“H-hey!” Leviathan growls, face flushing a deep shade of red.
“Mammon,” Lucifer warns, smoothing Leviathan’s hair as Mammon shrinks under his disapproving gaze. Though Lucifer’s expression softens, the eldest regarding Leviathan with a smile—genuine, sweet—bringing back faraway memories. A brother’s love, strong and true, and the unmistakable twinkle of pride unbidden in those eyes, the same eyes that watched over him in the Celestial realm and never stopped here in the Devildom. His heart swells with emotion, overwhelming but not unwelcome, the Avatar of Pride chuckling as arms wrap firmly around his waist, and Leviathan cries into his embrace.
In this moment, he’s a fledgling again, Lucifer’s arms and wings encircling and protecting him from the world. He’s loved, safe, all his worries melting away.
Until embarrassment gets the best of him, and Leviathan is very aware of himself and how his skin burns, quickly pulling back and averting his tearful gaze. Thankfully, his brothers allow him this, an unspoken understanding passing between them that lessens the tension, and he’s beyond grateful when Lucifer takes it upon himself to straighten his tie, voice filling the silence, “This is meant to be one of the happiest days of your life, is it not?”
“Y-yes!” Leviathan says without hesitance, still in awe you accepted his proposal. He recalls that night with utmost clarity, certain you’re standing in front of him now, eyes glistening with tears, and your smile so bright and beautiful he believes he’s ascended to the Celestial realm. Once he thought marriage a fantasy, uninteresting and unbecoming of an otaku such as himself, but you changed his mind—you changed his life. “But . . .”
“Stop right there! I know what’s goin through that head of yours, and it’s not true.” Mammon pinches Leviathan’s cheek, laughing heartily despite his brother’s murderous glare. “Who can resist my adorable lil brother, eh?”
“Mammon is correct.” Lucifer agrees. “What is it you say . . . believe in me who believes in you, yes?”
Leviathan’s mouth opens, but no words come out, caught in his throat. Instead, he sniffles, grateful tears rolling down his cheeks and snot streaming from his nose.
“Gross,” Mammon mutters. “I mean . . .” he improvises after Lucifer fixes him with an angry stare, clapping Leviathan on the back. “Ya look like a million Grimm!”
A wave of anxiety crashes over Leviathan. “H-hey! Wait . . .”
“We’ll see you soon, Leviathan.” Lucifer gives his shoulder a reassuring squeeze, and Leviathan nods, watching his brothers leave, their words of encouragement still ringing in his ears and strengthening his resolve. The only one who doubts him is himself, envy warping the world around him to fit its narrative—dark, lonely, and bleak. Though you love everything about him he finds disgusting, supporting him and inspiring him to become the demon he is today, and the demon he hopes to be in the future; a future he envisions with you by his side.
“Levi,” he imagines you say, the sweetness of your voice causing his heart to flutter and heat to creep down his neck to pool in his chest. “Can I come in?”
“You!” he squawks, catching your gaze in the mirror as you peek your head into the room. “I-it’s r-r-really you!” Quickly, he covers his eyes. “I’m not supposed to see you before the wedding! I-I heard it’s bad luck.”
“That’s an old human superstition,” you reassure him. “I wanted to see you . . . but I can leave if you’re uncomfortable.”
“N-no, stay!” he shouts, and then softly, “Please.” You want to see him. Years passed since you first arrived in the Devildom, countless days spent together, ending with you in his tub, your bodies and souls entwined, hearts beating as one, yet he still can’t believe you want to see him—that you want to marry him—that you want him. Every morning he wakes he falls in love with you again and again and again and again, and now he feels not a spark but a flame, burning with such intensity he aches in longing.
Your eyes meet in the mirror, and Leviathan gasps, mesmerized by your reflection and how it glimmers in the moonlight spilling through the window. Slowly, he faces you, his heart skipping a beat as he basks in your glory, shameless in his staring. Your smile is angelic, expression shy but full of affection, glistening with unshed tears as you look upon him, admiring him in return. The moment is etched into his memory, carefully filed away for safekeeping, saved not once but twice—a third time for good measure. He’ll never forget this, how you shine brighter than any star in the sky, radiating warmth and love, ridding him of doubt and instilling him with confidence; his love for you far too great to ignore.
“You look amazing,” you whisper.
“You do too . . .” He swallows. “You’re beyond amazing! You’re heavenly. My heart may give out before I make it to the altar.” Your laugh is music to his ears, leaving him weak in the knees. “You used charm and it’s super effective!”
“Don’t worry, I’ve come prepared,” you say, kneeling before him and presenting a gift box elegantly wrapped in orange ribbon. “A gift for my dearest Lord of Shadow.”
“Y-you shouldn’t have,” he stammers, touch gentle as he takes the box in his hands, untying the ribbon with unsteady fingers. Placing the top on the vanity, he grins, wide and toothy, admiring the two custom gaming controllers inside. “These are . . .” There are no words to describe the emotions flowing through and sweeping over him, surging forward in sharp stuttering sobs. Player 1 is inscribed on one and Player 2 on the other, the date on both in a heartfelt reminder of what the day is to bring and will mean after all is said and done, your bond continuing to grow and flourish.
You wipe the tears from his eyes, cradling his face in your hands. “I thought we could put them to good use later.”
Setting the box aside, he gathers you in his arms, pulling you onto his lap to kiss you, tender but fervent, the bitterness of his tears overpowered by the sweetness of your lips. “Love you I do, marry you I will,” he murmurs, resting his forehead against your own and savoring the feel of your fingers in his hair and as they run over the base of the horns now crowning his head.
“I love you too,” you laugh, your breath hot on his skin, sending a delightful shiver down his spine that causes his tail to curl. And he knows, as you lean in to kiss him, he loves you, and you love him, and there’s nowhere else he wants to be, happy and at peace in your arms.

Levi didn't know that happiness like that existed, that he could feel so comfortable in another’s presence, that he could gather the courage to hold their hand gently and tell them about his life willingly. Levi found it all, and he was grateful that he found peace in one person.
However, peace was a fragile state and it didn't last long. His euphoria shattered soon. Your time was up before he could ask you to spend the rest of your life with him. He didn't know what he regretted more — the fights that had shaken both your worlds, or the times he thought he hadn’t been there for you, or the sinking feeling that he couldn’t give you all the happy memories he had planned to.
He knew about your mortality but his fear had paralysed his mind into denial. You were gone before he could accept that he would be alone once again.
Still, he kept his gloomy feelings in check. What was the point? He knew this would happen. He knew, he knew! Who should he curse? What should he place the blame on if not his own naivete?
With a face as stern as the oceans that he ruled, he entered your room but his eyes were dry as a desert. He finally broke down in tears at the sight of your dead fish. How cruel of you to not leave behind the one friend you shared in common!
༺☆༻
"You know he swims with more vigour when you come to visit me," he could hear your voice in his mind as he pictured you glancing at your energetic pet. "I think he likes you!"
"Eh? Eh?! So-Someone li-li-likes me?!" he used to blush with joy.
"Yes, Levi," you would smile sweetly, "I think he approves of our love."
༺☆༻
The love still tugged at his heart like a wounded bird wanting to stay still. That was what made it so difficult. Even when the person left, the memories stayed, and he didn't know if those were meant to please him or torment him for the remainder of his days.
He shut himself in his room and refused to talk to anyone, only fulfilling his responsibilities for which he believed he was 'created'. Was there any other point of life if not to satisfy the authorities?
How he destroyed his mind in his own time was a matter for him alone.
༺☆༻
It was on one such mission assigned to him that he came across a human who resembled you. They were the splitting image of how he remembered you as.
No words of encouragement could urge him to approach them. Was he not betraying your memory by talking to this new person? Could it not be a twisted trap? In all honesty, he was scared; scared that grief was making him hallucinate and the moment he tried to approach them, they would vanish. Wasn’t it better for them to exist and live than be tarnished by his company?
Despite the noble thoughts that plagued his mind, they always had his presence around. He stalked their every move during his free time. He could not let them come to harm, not on his watch.
His face softened when he saw them buy a pet snake. Maybe he could have one too. That was how he met his beloved Henry, the first one of his pets, the one who he would eventually lose. His new pet snake was a constant source of comfort for him, just as tracking their every move was.
Days were passing pleasantly. One could say too pleasantly.
He had made himself believe that someday soon he would muster the courage to go talk to them. If everything worked out well, they might become friends. Henry would get a snake bestie too!
Alas! That life was too good to last!
He noticed their snake looking sick before them. He felt a sense of foreboding. It was deja vu.
No, no, no, no, no! He had to make sure that it was fine. When he tried approaching the snake, it hissed and slithered away in the sand, away from his reach, as if moving in rhythm with death. Some place nearby, they didn’t see how a reaper pulled them close in a cold embrace.
This time, Levi didn’t restrain himself, howling and shaking with sorrow as he held their lifeless body in his arms. It wasn’t even you, so why did he feel so broken?
He didn’t even know them! Not really.
But he knew the moment he finally touched them. He could feel the warmth of your soul slowly disappearing from the person he held in his arms.
༺☆༻
The next time Levi found you — or as he now realised, your reincarnate — he tried to keep his distance… and failed. His failure cost him another heartache as he saw you dead, the corpse of your pet lying nearby.
It happened so many times — the pattern following, a dead pet at your heels — that he feared stepping outside his room. If he held your dead body one more time in his arms, he felt sure that he would go mad. He dreaded that face that had once made his heart feel like liquid. So, without any explanation to any of his brothers, he locked himself up in his room with his games, anime, manga and whatever could distract him from the pain he had brought upon himself.
At least Ruri-chan and Azuki-tan weren’t as cruel as you! They wouldn’t leave him alone.
༺☆༻
A long time had passed before he faced a new change in his life. He had grown so accustomed to his hermit existence that it annoyed him, but Lord Diavolo’s orders needed to be followed. His duty was important, since it kept him out of trouble with Lucifer and paid for his moe moe kyun adorable figurines of his waifus and husbandos!
Other than that, the exchange programme didn’t concern him. Human beings didn’t concern him anymore. He wanted to stay in his room, burdened with shame and helplessness, doing his best to forget and forgive a fact that was beyond his control anyway.
༺☆༻
He was obliged to have dinner with his family that night. Apparently Lucifer wanted all of his brothers to meet the exchange student. Levi grunted but paused his game and made his way to the dining room, slouched and grumpy.
“Why does Lucifer have to do this? Does he even know how difficult it is to get to the last level?! OFC he doesn’t LOLOLOL that normie could never-! No wonder he called me. How is a mere normie to understand the importance of my mission?! Ahhhhh my unused joints are crying out in agony. Uwwaaaaaaah end my misery, let this gross otaku go back to his room!!”
Ahead of him, he could hear chatter and he felt sick to the pit of his stomach. He was not ready for this level of social gathering, with some extroverts no less! Not to mention that there would be a new face in the midst!
You were guarded from view when he entered the dining room looking ready to pass out. It was the voice that gave you away. All his anxiety and discomfort was forgotten. He was fixed to the spot.
Without another glance, he left, rushing for his room.
“Levi? Levi?! Where are ya goin’?” Mammon called after him.
“Leviathan! Come back this instant,” Lucifer looked displeased.
“Did I do something wrong?” you asked timidly.
“Ohhh hunny don’t worry about him. He probably has some anime to watch,” Asmo spoke soothingly.
After shutting his door after him, he collapsed into a heap on his floor.
Those eyes… How long had it been since he actually looked into your eyes?
And he knew that he wouldn’t sleep peacefully that night.
༺☆༻
He tried his best to not cross your path. It shouldn’t have been THAT difficult. He had managed to do it several times during the last centuries. The only difference was that now you wanted to know him, to be his friend and in front of that persistence, he felt weak.
“Leviathan? Are you inside? I bought a new game but I can’t understand the mechanics. Can you show me, please?”
“Leviathan, I got some snacks. Would you like to share?”
“Leviathan, what are you up to? I think we should get acquainted, you know?”
When he finally responded, you seemed to grow bolder.
“Levi! Asmo said I could call you that. I hope you don’t mind. It would be nice if we could talk…”
The sadness in your voice broke his heart so he yielded. On witnessing the efforts that you were putting to form a bond with him, he opened the doors to his room and his heart for you. After weeks of gaming together and getting to know you — this you that lived independent of the love he felt ages ago — he couldn’t help wanting to be with you as more than friends.
You were radiant in his eyes and he felt comfortable around you. How long had it been since he actually enjoyed company?
However, there was no denying the sad truth that with something precious came the fear of losing it. It was a double edged sword and Levi could clearly see himself getting impaled at the sharp end of his feelings. Yet it would be a choice he made himself and he could no longer deny himself that.
༺☆༻
“Levi,” your voice floated from the other side of the door.
The controller slipped from his fingers. Bewilderment was quickly replaced by surprise and rage, followed closely by relief. So you hadn’t forgotten him.
The last few weeks had been dreadful. When you started spending time, holed up with Solomon in his study, Levi felt that he had lost you. What did you two talk about in solitude? He kept wondering with envy.
“Levi, are you there? I have something to show you!”
That broke his reverie. He got up and opened the door for you.
“Hi!” you said with a smile. “Wow Levi it’s been a while since I saw you, huh?”
He fidgeted nervously and nodded, neither looking at you nor speaking. There was silence for a few moments before you spoke awkwardly.
“Are you angry with me?”
“N-No,” he managed, his face flushing pink. He understood your decision, truly he did. “Everyone will p-p-prefer Solomon to a yucky otaku like m-m-me.”
When he saw you move closer from the corner of his eyes, he turned towards you in shock. The expression on your face just confused him more.
He wasn’t expecting you to look… disappointed.
“Levi, why would you say that? That’s not true… You must know that. In fact, I have something to show that I appreciate you.”
He followed your gaze and blinked. Perched on your arm was a phoenix. He felt a little stupid for not noticing it before. The bird fixed a curious gaze on Levi and spread its wings, showcasing its splendid plumage of every colour imaginable.
“Pet it. Go on.”
When he hesitantly moved his hand forward, the bird leaned in, almost wanting to be caressed.
You smiled when he was mesmerised by the soft feathers. “I am so glad it likes you!”
“Yeah,” he murmured, awestruck that a mythical bird would actually welcome his affection. That’s when he remembered something.
“Wait, but what is the surprise?”
“Only that I want you to look after the little guy with me. This phoenix will be under OUR care from now on!”
His hand fell to his side stiffly. “Whaaaa- Buuuu- Wouldn’t Satan be a better choice for this kind of thing??”
“Well yeah,” you hesitated. “But I want it to be you, Levi.”
His throat felt parched and he was at a loss of words. He looked at the phoenix and then at your uneasy face. Knowing exactly what he wanted, he allowed him this excess.
“O-Okay, sure, [Name]. I d-don’t mind if you are fine with a gross, yucky otaku like me.”
He lost the function of his brain when your face brightened up and you grabbed his hand with a joyous cheer. “Yayy. You will? That makes me so happy!”
When you were leaving, he felt part nervous, part ecstatic.

"Mammon, take the next left."
"Yeah yeah, I know."
"Jump over the infrared sensor in the next hallway."
The white-haired agent effortlessly lept over the invisible trip line, "I told ya, I know!"
"Watch out for the center display case."
Mammon swiveled around the case with ease. "Dammit Levi, I know! We went over the blueprint again and again, I know this place like the back of my hand. So quit it!"
"Is that so?" Levi spun in his computer chair, "Because last time you said that, Lucifer had to come bail you out."
"Tch, that rich guy had too many gadgets," Mammon lowered his voice and came to a pause at the intersection of halls. He peeked around the corner to watch the pair of guards turn down another corridor.
"And you've got a habit of getting distracted. Anyways, this museum is nothing to scoff at, it's got plenty of security. It's only been easy for you so far because you've got me, the genius hacker, working on it."
As Mammon ran ahead, he smiled. He would never admit it aloud but Levi was good. It's been a breeze so far, at this rate they'd grab the painting and be home before sun up.
The painting in question was done by the mysterious artist M.C. Everyone wanted to get their hands on this work in particular as it was described to depict the human condition. Investors would pay a pretty penny to be the owner and the money was already burning a hole in Mammon's pocket. If they were going to finish the job early anyway, Mammon wondered if he could make away with a second prize. There was another work close by their goal that had piqued his interest when reviewing the building plans. The painting was owned by the old King Solomon. People debate whether he was strictly the owner or if he was possibly the painter. The painting would pair well with the work by M.C. and could potentially score the syndicate a huge bonus. The commissions the two of them could earn was making Mammon drool. He turned right for the section that held Solomon's painting.
"Mammon, what are you doing?!" Levi shouted into their comm system.
"You'll thank me for this," Mammon smirked.
"No no no no, you idiot, don't!" Levi typed furiously to try to disable the security devices in front of Mammon as he ran. He was barely keeping up but so far he'd turned off the sensors, exchanged the camera feeds to run on a loop, and diverted guards' attention by signaling a trip of the alarms in a far part of the museum. That was as far as luck took them though.
When Mammon entered the room for the ancient mural, the roll-down security gate came crashing down. "Levi, what the hell's going on?" There was only static on the line in response.
Levi could hear Mammon through the camera feed in the room but the room seemed to be a dead spot for their comms. "That moron," Levi growled his frustration as he scanned the cameras throughout the facility. Someone must have brought those gates down. Then he saw him, it was tough to miss the bulky mass running through the halls, "Diavolo... which means," his thought was cut off.
"That's right, Leviathan," a new voice entered his ear.
"Barbatos..." Levi sighed. Another genius hacker enters the chat, Levi thought as he tried to free Mammon. Nothing that he attempted would get the gate up or restore the connection with his partner. Levi frustratedly ripped off his headset, grabbed a tablet from its dock, the extra painting canister, and rushed to the nearest entrance. He'd have to make the grab himself. "Damn you Mammon, you couldn't stick to the mission this one time." Levi tapped on his tablet as he ran, "You just had to be greedy and push for something more than we came for." In the distance a gate crashed shut, Levi smiled having used their tactics against them.
Levi could hear the door rattle as Diavolo banged on it. It wouldn't completely stop him, just diverted him to a longer route. Diavolo was a professional that didn't wander into dead ends like the deadweight Levi was working with. Levi took a moment to crouch down near a safe wing. He scanned through the security cameras on his tablet. They were still on loop and the guards were addressing his false alarm. The main problem was Diavolo and Barbatos from Devil's Associates. "Why'd they have to be here tonight?" Levi grumbled and got back up to run toward the painting. It is a straight shot but once there, the room that stored the treasured piece would take time to navigate. At night there is a fingerprint scanner to open the room, of course, sensors at all different angles, and a wall trip that would alarm if the painting was removed.
First up, is the fingerprint scanner. Levi held up the tablet to project the saved fingerprint that he and Mammon had gathered during their recon. The panel beeped and the gate lifted offering entry to the room. Next, Levi had to avoid the sensors. Unfortunately, there was no way to disable these infrared sensors. If he had turned them off, the night guards would get an alert. Levi pulled a pair of goggles out of his pocket that would allow him to see the infrared with ease. He shimmied and contorted to make his way around the beams and towards the painting. Levi was the most unfamiliar with the last security measure. To figure out what kind of mechanism hid behind the way, Levi pulled out his tablet and took a few x-ray images. The purple-haired agent frowned as he assessed the pulleys and possible ways to bypass the whole thing entirely. The only idea that came to him was what he went with. There was no sense in wasting time when the mission was already compromised. He might as well try to get out of the museum as soon as possible. While Levi pulled the framed photo from the wall, he kept his finger on the hanging nail to simulate the pressure of the painting. Once he placed the frame on the ground, Levi grabbed his tablet and chose to overload the mechanism's battery. If it fried itself while the pressure was adequate, he hoped that at the very least they would note to replace the battery without having the alarms activate. It seemed to do the trick! There weren't any guards rushing him or blaring noises so that had to be a good sign, right? Levi snapped the corners of the frame and freed the painting. Delicately, he rolled the paper and put it into the canister.
"Levi," Diavolo entered the room but stayed by the entrance cutting off Levi's exit.
He looked around the room, trying to figure out anything he could do but he was stuck. The infrared beams were the only things between them. Maybe Diavolo thought Levi had disabled them? "Diavolo, you're too late, I've already got the painting."
"Hm," Diavolo scratched his chin and smiled, "That may be so but you're going to have to get past me if you want to leave with the painting."
If it came down to a fight, there's no way Levi would come out the victor. Diavolo had muscles on muscles, Levi wouldn't stand a chance.
By some miracle, the ventilation grate at the top corner of the room busted open. "Thought you were going to leave me behind?" Mammon smirked, propping himself up on the wall and hanging out of the vent.
"Mammon!" Levi wouldn't admit it but he was thankful to have such a tenacious partner. "Take the painting!" He chucked the container up to the man in the corner.
"Whoa!" Mammon caught the canister and saluted to the men standing in the room, "See you on the outside!"
"Wait, you're not going to help me??" Levi whined as he watched white hair disappear back into the vents.
"A shame," Diavolo shook his head. "Barbatos will probably trap him in the vents or intercept him outside. What are we going to do?"
They were locked in a stalemate. Well, nothing to lose, Levi thought. "This," he shoved his hand out in front of him, triggering the infrared sensor.
Diavolo and Levi covered their ears as the loud alarm bells rang throughout the museum.
"Are you going to stay and get caught with me?" Levi provokes.
Diavolo frowns but makes a quick exit.
Levi leaves next. He pulls out his tablet to find where the guards are coming from. Since they were previously on the other side of the building, the majority are running together in a large group. Levi pulled up the blueprint to find the closest exit, "Mammon you better make it out," he huffed and packed in his tablet. There was only one exit at the rear of the museum that didn't have a guard posted. Levi already unlocked it and it would get him close to their rendezvous spot. Just as he began running toward freedom, Levi could hear the sounds of the guards shouting. "Mammon, you better make it out so I can kill you myself." He barely made it through the doors and into the cover of night but he made it nonetheless.
