“Why choose me?” for schmico!

I’ve had this prompt a while and I really have no excuse. So sorry it took so long! Also, I left in “hot boi.” Because I wanted to. This one feels a bit disjointed, but I like the concept and think it still works. It’s a bit longer so a lot is under a cut. I hope you enjoy!

Levi Schmitt was not having a good day. He had tripped on his sprint to the ER and not only missed out on a trauma, but twisted his ankle and wound up in a bed in that same ER.

“Please don’t page Nico,” He begged Casey Parker, who was taking care of him. “Any ortho doctor but Nico. He’s going to think I’m so lame, and I can’t give him another tick in the ‘cons’ column.”

“He has a pros and cons list about you?” Casey glanced up, alarmed.

Levi shrugged, “I don’t know. Probably. Why wouldn’t he?”

“Because he loves you?” Casey seemed incredulous.

“Sure. But he’s this handsome and talented ortho god while I’m some clumsy intern. I’m just going to enjoy it while it lasts. He’ll tire of my at some point. Everyone usually does.”

“Have you mentioned this to him?”

“Of course not.”

Casey considered Levi for a moment, clearly feeling some sympathy for his friend who can’t seem to see how special he is to Nico. “Okay, well, you’re all set. It’s just a mild twist and a few scrapes. You’ll be fine, just don’t run on it for a bit.”

Later that day, Nico Kim snuck up on Levi as he was finishing up some charting by a nurses’ station. He bent down to whisper in his ear, “I’ve missed you, love.”

Levi jumped, startled by Nico’s voice. He turned to smack him on the chest. “You scared me!”

“You’re so cute. I haven’t seen you all day.” Nico crowded in close, making Levi have to crane his neck up to make eye contact.

“I, um, I’ve been busy. Lots of injuries and surgeries and such,” Levi stuttered out.

“Injuries, huh? Because I heard you may have had one of those injuries,” Nico was smirking, a laugh evident in his voice, clearly unaware how upset Levi had become by that statement.

“Oh. Yeah. I fell and twisted my ankle. Silly me.” He gave a humorless laugh. “Listen, I have to go.”

Nico’s face fell, obviously not expecting such a reaction. “Okay. Wanna come by tonight? Please? I really miss sleeping next to you.”

“Uh, yeah, I guess.” Before Nico could respond, Levi took off in the other direction, leaving a sad and confused hot boi in his wake.

Levi knocked tentatively at the door of Nico’s apartment, still feeling embarrassed from earlier. Nico opened the door with a blinding smile, causing Levi to inhale sharply through his nose. How can someone be so beautiful?

Nico grabbed Levi’s arm, lightly pulled him into the apartment, and met his mouth in a deep kiss. They broke apart after a few moments, both flushed. “Mm, I’ll never tire of that.”

Levi rubbed the back of his neck self-consciously. “I’m glad my kisses can make up for the rest of my mess.” As Levi brushed by him on the way to the couch, Nico furrowed his brow, utterly confused once again.

Nico followed him to the couch, plopping down and pulling him onto his lap. He encircled his arms around Levi’s waist, wanting to be as close to him as possible. Normally, Levi would melt into his embrace, but, instead, Nico felt him tense up. “What’s wrong, love?”

“Why are you being so sweet? Why do you put up with me? Why choose me?” Levi slid off of Nico’s lap to put some distance between the two.

Nico’s face grew sad and almost hopeless. “What? What are you saying?”

Levi shot up and threw his hands in the air. “I’m a mess. I tripped on the way to the ER and ended up actually admitted into the ER. I’m gawky and clumsy. And you’re so much… more than I am. You’re going to get bored with me or realize you deserve someone more like you. Let’s just end it now and save you the trouble and me the full brunt of the heartache.”

If Nico looked sad before, it was nothing compared to his expression after these words; he looked utterly devastated. “W-what? You… you want to break up?” His voice was shaky and watery.

“I don’t want to. But it’s going to happen eventually, so why prolong the inevitable?” Levi seemed resigned as he resolutely stared at a spot on the wall above Nico’s head.

“It is?”

“Well, it’s not like you’d ever want to marry me.” Levi scoffed, as though that was a preposterous thought.

Nico audibly swallowed. “I… I don’t?”

Levi whipped his head down at Nico’s words. “What?”

“Who says I don’t want to marry you? Not tomorrow, or anything. But spending the rest of my life with you sounds incredible. It sounds like the perfect way to spend a life.” Nico softened his expression to emphasize his sincerity.

Blinking rapidly, Levi stumbled back onto the couch, feeling around frantically for Nico’s hand. “You want to be with me? Like, in the future?” He turned to meet Nico’s eyes once again.

“How do you not already know that? I love you. That’s not something I just say. I truly mean it. Why choose you? Because you’re all I’ve ever wanted! I couldn’t imagine a more perfect guy for me. I don’t have one foot out the door, and I’m not looking for reasons to leave you. I’m all in, Levi. All in.” Nico audibly swallowed, clearly nervous about Levi’s reaction.

Levi was taken aback. He hadn’t known just how deep Nico’s feelings for him truly were, and it was filling him with warmth. His hands were shaking slightly, and he could feel pinpricks of tears in the corner of his eyes. Looking at Nico was too overwhelming in the moment, so he buried his face in his hands and let out a breathless huff of laughter. Nico wrapped his arms around him and pulled Levi towards him, wanting to be as close to him as possible in that moment.

“I want to be with you not in spite of your quirks, but because of them. It’s gonna take a lot to scare me off, love. I promise you that.” Nico whispered into Levi’s ear, his face still in his hands.

Levi lifted his head just enough to be heard, “I love you. I really do love you so much. I’ve never felt this way, and I’m just so scared of losing you that I freaked out. I don’t want to break up. I never want to be without you.”

“Good. Because you’re stuck with me, I’m afraid.” Nico crooked a finger under Levi’s chin and tilted his head up.

“Poor, poor me,” Levi whispered into the hair’s breadth of space between their lips, before closing the miniscule distance.

It’s been ~a month since the announcement ...

... and I still don’t know whether to side eye Krista for hiring Niko Terho after she botched what was once Schmico’s epic potential so badly or wink at her for possibly going for a sure thing as the chemistry and fanbase have already been established. We don’t know yet for sure (to my knowledge/correct me if I’m wrong) if Lucas, Niko’s character, will be Levi’s new love interest, but it would be a Choice™ move, and for all we know Levi’s new love interest could be Daniel A.K.A. Blue, Harry Shum Jr.’s character, as Harry also has a strong pre-established queer shipper fanbase. It easily could be neither.🤷🏻 All that I’m saying is that interesting casting choices have been made.

Why try to turn the obvious in to a question?

I’ve seen a few people confused by the current standing of Levi and Nico’s relationship. Allow me to juxtapose (not directly compare) - by way of comparison (🙄, I know, I know) - it to how Gallavich got engaged for the last time to explain my take on it. Ian believed that Mickey couldn’t know that they were it for each other because Ian was all Mickey knew about being in a relationship despite the fact that things always felt right between them (even through the different forms of denial and multiple fights), that there were so many other kinds of men for Mickey to experience being with, and he should have felt free to do so, but, when Ian saw that other men would never see Mickey the way that he does, he swiftly beat Byron (Mickey’s date) up and proposed to Mickey for the final time that led to their actual marriage, which is why, during this time, Mickey punched Cole (Ian’s date) in to unconsciousness and accepted Ian’s proposal before he let Ian finish it (because that’s normal ... for them). Ian had to figure out what Mickey had known all along deep down: when it’s right, it’s right, and you don’t always have to look further. On the flip side, Nico sees that Levi can’t explore men right now who can give Levi what Nico believes he can’t because of the pandemic, so maybe Nico is realizing that trying to find that elusive “more” is a luxury the world doesn’t have any more. What if he’s starting to see what came so naturally to him (being attracted to Levi and simply being with him) is enough for them and that knowing precisely how to be what Levi needs in other ways is just some thing that he’ll have to grow in to and vise versa like Ian and Mickey continue to do so. Maybe I’m crazy, but I made the connection (as it were) because I’ve lived through witnessing the emotional growing pains of both Ian and Mickey for the last decade, and I know that Krista learned from John from inside of the “Shameless (US)” writers room and maybe she picked up on how to prompt a happy ending when the fans demand it due to the fact that the writers have messed up so horribly (I said what I said). I’m not saying that there definitely won’t be a rocky road ahead. I’m just pointing to possible rationales for solutions to underappreciated problems.

... Am I really the only one who knows Krista from her “Shameless (US)” days and saw the COVID-19 sex partners thing from a mile away?

Side note: I suddenly am a little afraid to play poker with my mother because her face was stone when I told her that’s what I’ve been calling for as to what the writers are doing with Schmico at the start of the season during the interval time between her having seen the premiere already and my having hadn’t yet seen it.

I’m not too worried about their future either. They now have more time for feelings to get twisted in and honest conversations to be had (we already got some honesty from Nico in his proposal, Levi’s always honest, and who else cackled while Nico shook his head ‘no’ the whole time that he said “I’m fine”?), and, yes, a lot of actors are doing multiple shows at once lately, so I’m not bothered by Alex doing “Walker” (didn’t he do the second season of “Insatiable” and Jake do The Thing About Harry while “Grey’s Anatomy” was still filming?).

That being said, I don’t trust most writers as far as I can throw them, like I said above, I’m from the “Shameless (US)” fandom, so I hope, for her sake, that Krista learned how to not treat queer couples from her former boss and what resulted in all of the negative press and blow back he faced for his treatment of its fan-favourite queer couple, because I can still write articles ...

To the Anon who just tried to troll me with “Nah Schmico are better off without each other,” ...

... I had originally deleted it with out too much thought, but I went back to it (which is how I can see it, but not actually reply to it, because Tumblr has weird publishing rules) because why not? It’s Saturday.

1. I want to know how people have so much time. Like, ... okay, why are you calling them Schmico if you don't want them to be Schmico? What a strange way to troll.

Which leads me to 2. While, yes, I am still pro-Schmico (for now), where in that post did I make that truly clear? I merely gave a suggestion for why certain writing decisions might have been made. I mean ... yeah, I did approach it from an affirmative standpoint, but from the presumptive writers stand-in position (not necessarily my own). I’d say “Go troll a more hardcore Schmico shipper with your vague disdain,” but that would be worse (for you or the shipper would be up the shipper), so, ... I don’t know, ... maybe don’t ...?

I really want ...

... to be more enthusiastically grateful that “Grey’s Anatomy” has been heavy-handedly (an Ani DiFranco classic in the background of a 2001 flashback ≠ suble) making almost all of their female leads fall on the queer scale lately for some reason. It’d just be a lot easier if it didn’t seem like they want us to believe that they got our hopes up with the handling of the only two queer male lead-and-reoccurring characters’ relationship that they ever had in their 16 seasons.
