Lewis Latimer - Say His Name!
Happy Black History Month🖤
Before Black History Month, there was Negro History Week, established in 1926. In 2026, we mark 100 years of honoring and celebrating Black history.
A full century of recognizing our beautiful culture and legacy 🖤🤎
I've been thinking about what Somah's last name would be if bethesda bothered to flesh her out, and I finally settled on Somah Latimer. It's a direct nod to Lewis Latimer, the historical inventor and draftsman who famously invented the durable carbon filament for lightbulbs.
I like the idea that maybe she’s distantly related to him since she is sorta like a draftsman, too!
Shining a Light on Lewis Latimer A Visionary Who Transformed Technology
Lewis Latimer taught himself mechanical drawing and drafting and helped Alexander Graham Bell draft the necessary drawings to receive a patent for Bell’s telephone. He was a member of Thomas Edison’s elite research team and invented an efficient and less expensive lightbulb than Edison’s. Possibly due to the whitewashing of history, Latimer is not well remembered today for his many lasting accomplishments. [1, 2]
Hello! This is your daily reminder that Thomas Edison did NOT invent the lightbulb, he stole it from a black man named Lewis Latimer.
Thomas Edison actually stole most of his inventions, so next time you think about him, think “man, fuck that guy”.
