Brigham Young University Idaho
I have lived in Rexburg Idaho for almost two and a half years now. I remember the day I came in I was excited and nervous. I thought this was going to be a good place for me. I have never been so wrong about anything in my life BYUI was probably a great school once. But now it is a disorganized mess. HOUSING First off, housing is ridiculous. The cost for me to live in even the cheapest of housing is approximately $225 per month. Which you would think is a pretty good deal for housing. False. Most of these places are below the standard of living. Broken facets, clogged drains, the Internet is monitored and does not work even if you are just doing homework, parking costs extra (and had a whole other set of problems that I will talk about next), management will charge you enormous fees that are unfair/unnecessary, and you share your dump with five other people. For $225 I could get an apartment to myself and not have to deal with any of the above issues that I named. Unfortunately you cannot live anywhere else. Even if the school over books itself for the semester. They would rather you be homeless. PARKING aside from the fact that the on campus parking is ridiculous: overselling passes, giving parking tickets out to people that have passes, and giving your parking away to stupid events that are unnecessary, the off campus housing will boot and tow you without any legal ground. Yes, people have tried to sue them. No, they have not succeeded. Why? Because they own a monopoly of the area. The city will not get involved because they hate the students here, even though we bring economic growth, the school won't help because it isn't their problem, and the students are left being screwed over yet again from BYUI. ACADEMICS the academics should not be allowed to run the way you do. For starters, the religion classes have a controlling power over students. You must take one religion class each semester, and you can not double up to finish faster. The homework is opinion based, which I have found to mean that if my opinion is different than the instructors, then I get a worst grade. The required class forces ideas of marriage before everything on students. Being a gay male, I do not want to be told twice a week for an hour how I need to marry a woman, and how my natural born desires are discussing and self destructive. If you are lucky you have an open minded teacher that will try to be loving towards you. Unfortunately for me I have a teacher that is so strong on his opinion that my classroom commentary is considered disruptive and he jumps over any point that I make. CONCLUSION these are not all my problems with BYUI. But I do have class in the morning and I cannot function without some bit of sleep. People ask why I hate BYUI? The answer is because we all do. You just don't know it yet. And I hope that someday, their corruption will be brought to light and that the individuals that are slowly screwing us over are brought to justice. Please note that this is not agains the Mormon church at all. Rather the university and their priorities/dis-functional administration. May god have mercy on their souls.
