Thought I’d share: A great short thread about rep+diversity & parts of it are things that have been mentioned on here time & again. The amount of engagement the thread has gives me some hope in terms of how audiences (fandoms especially) view these issues.. cautious hope, but still..
I’ve been saying the same thing for...ever except when I say it I get called a “hater” and receive endless anons telling me that I should die and when this person says it they go viral lol.
To recap for the billionth time: things that are diverse aren’t automatically good. Let me repeat that for good measure: JUST BECAUSE SOMETHING IS DIVERSE OR HAS REP IN IT DOESN’T MEAN IT’S GOOD. Matter of fact things that are both diverse AND good are so rare that I can probably count them in one hand. Yet those awful ones that are poorly done or have bottom of the barrel, shitty representation get propped up. That’s because y’all are like toddlers where the moment someone dangles something shiny in front of you you chase after it. Y’all will keep running after it even after it turns out that it was cubic zirconia not the diamond you believed it was. That’s why, for as long as y’all keep this up, we’ll never get better rep. When you let the projects that are both diverse and good fail/fly under the radar while you reward the creators and/or shows with praise for doing THE ABSOLUTE BARE FUCKING MINIMUM then no one is ever going to try harder. You give them no motivation to. At all. I’ve been telling y’all this same thing for years and you keep looping the pattern every damn fucking time.
“It also doesn’t mean the cast isn’t a ploy for diversity points” is really important because this is something y’all also repeatedly fall for. I can think of one particular showrunner that legit uses queer characters for brownie points and nothing else while giving y’all two minutes of screentime (that are not even well written two minutes mind you) and you STILL fall for it. You prop this person up like they’re the LGBT messiah when all they’ve done is consistently write shitty queer storylines and give y’all less than a handful of minutes per episode. You can’t even see you’re being used and that’s insanely troubling to me. Stop falling for it jfc. It’s not that hard.
