Tarmogoyf by Ryan Barger
Card of the Day - April 7th, 2021 “Lhurgoyf”
No other card than Ghostfire or Urza’s Sunglasses/Mishra’s Bauble has affected Magic lore as much as the Lhurgoyf.
But where... is it... ?
Ach! Read, run! It’s...
It’s a 0/1 for 4... unless it’s super late in the game and you just got hit by a boardwipe in a weenie deck. Lhurgoyf is still the quintessentially Timmy card at it’s heart. Now, it’s nowhere near as beloved as Tarmogoyf, but I think Lhurgoyf is still the superior ‘goyf.
And all of its arts are just so cool, but this one I feel really cements it. Now, as for Hans and Saffi - I personally like to believe that Saffi never went back after Time Spiral, and that her card is canon. She was whisked to the future of Dominaria, 60ish years after the Phyrexian Invasion, nearly 5000 years after she saw the Lhurgoyf. Hans managed to run due to her warning, and got the village to fight off the Lhurgoyf. They both made it. They’re both gone now, brother and sister separated by millenia, but reunited in the afterlife, able to relax in an idillic forest, their legacy living on via planeswalkers and Dominarian wizards who have heard the story of the Lhurgoyf and found the right mana frequency to create summons of them... and of the ancient lhurgoyf as well.
Where would I run Lhurgoyf? Two places. 1. A Hans/Saffi EDH deck, because I’m of the opinion that the two should effectively have “Partner with” for each other, and I’ve Rule Zero’d it at my table. It’s good enough for Will and Rowan, its good enough for Erik’s kids.
2. Cube. Lhurgoyf I say is the better Goyf for cube, especially if you have the tried and true archetypes of BR Sac Matters, UB Mill, BG Reanimator and RG Stompy Aggro. You can make a cool BRG Jund Stompy Sac deck, have the Goyf as Board Wipe insurance, or as a “screw you” to the Mill player in GB Reanimator. Reanimate that Goyf, what don’t you? Have yourself an Apocalypse Demon in the same cube and dude, you got two big bad critters to terrorize your playgroup with.
(I’m going to try to do these daily again. Hope I can.)

Krenko’s Guide to Creature Types: Lhurgoyf
Art by Pete Venters
What is a Lhurgoyf (flavorfully)?
Nobody knows and nobody’s sticking around long enough to find out. They’re big, they’re hungry, and they have sharp, pointy teeth. They’ve never appeared in a story and their flavor text is extremely minimal. All we know is that they have odd diets and grow rapidly.
What is a Lhurgoyf (mechanically)?
A Lhurgoyf’s power and toughness are equal to the amount of X in all graveyards, sometimes +1, where X can be anything. Many of them also have a basic keyword ability. Lhurgoyfs appear in all five colors as a result of a cycle, but they haven’t really pushed into any one color other than that.
Can I make a Lhurgoyf deck?
Lhurgoyfs tend to be mutually exclusive due to their eating habits. As each cares about a different aspect of what’s in graveyards, they work best in a deck that aims toward maximizing them in specific instead of just maximizing cards in the graveyard. For example, Cantivore requires a deck heavy on Enchantments while Magnivore needs a deck full of Sorceries, so neither would be at full potential in a deck with a mix of both. A few Lhurgoyfs can overlap, and there’s actually two that just count creatures, but overall it just doesn’t work as a tribe.
This isn’t to say you can’t run a deck using a Lhurgoyf as the win condition- Tarmogoyf is a classic bruiser and many of the others can be seriously terrifying in their own decks. They just don’t work very well with each other.
Is Lhurgoyf a good creature type?
With only eight real entrants that can’t synergize, Lhurgoyf would be an awful type if they didn’t have such a clear mechanical identity that you can pop off designs for other Lhurgoyfs while barely thinking. “Artifacts.” “Zombies.” “White Cards.” I’d love to see more Lhurgoyfs in the future, and repeating card types while adding abilities is entirely reasonable. Maybe one with “Whenever this deals combat damage to a player, that player mills 2” and counts creatures. Maybe one that can tap to rummage. Or maybe a big blue/red one that wheels your hand on ETB. There’s a lot of possibilities.
That said, Lhurgoyf still has issues. It doesn’t have the monopoly on its own ability (Lord of Extinction and Slag Fiend should both clearly be Lhurgoyfs) and as far as flavor goes, nobody’s really sure what connects these creatures in-universe.
I very much like the seed that is Lhurgoyf, but I’m disappointed with the reality of it being just a handful of cards with minimal flavor.
