The rules, Avery decided, were nonexistent. Which, of course, made them Jameson’s favorite kind. He was already walking backward down the sidewalk, smirk in place like he’d just been handed the keys to the universe.
“You’re stalling,” he taunted, green eyes glittering under the streetlamps.
“I’m calculating,” Avery countered, though her heartbeat was anything but logical. “Unlike you, I don’t leap into games blind.”
“Blind?” Jameson tipped his head back with a laugh, spreading his arms wide like the night itself belonged to him. “Heiress, I’ve never needed eyes to see where the thrill is.”
“Wow.” She folded her arms, pretending not to notice how her chest felt tight and wild all at once. “You really think that line’s going to work?”
“Not a line.” He was suddenly close—too close. One second, he’d been all theatrics; the next, his hand brushed her elbow, his voice dropping low enough to curl heat in her stomach. “Just… fact.”
Avery tilted her chin, refusing to give him the satisfaction. “You’re not winning this.”
Jameson’s smile was infuriating, devastating. “We’ll see.”
And then he was off—darting toward the darkened street corner, reckless as ever.
“Wait—Jameson!”
But her own feet betrayed her, carrying her after him. Because it wasn’t just the chase. It was the way every part of this night—of him—felt like a dare she couldn’t bring herself to refuse.
