CHICAGO PUBLIC LIBRARY CHANGES ITS NAME POLICY

I am very proud to announce that starting today, Chicago Public Library does not require patrons to use their legal name on their library card. Patrons can choose the name they wish to appear on their card, and that is the only name that will be used by library staff or in library communications. ID is still required in order to get a card, but only to prevent identity fraud. If you already have a card with your old name on it, you can bring it to the library and get a new card with your real name for no cost and with no ID required!

Any Tumblarians who would like to learn more or advocate for this at their libraries, please reach out! I've been very involved in this change at CPL and would be happy to answer questions. (I'll be out of town and away from the Internets for the next few days, though, so please be patient if I don't answer right away.)

Crime committed within the library, the misuse of library resources, facilities and equipment is an age old tradition in library and information science profession. This article presents a panoramic view of policies with which University of Buea Library is run or managed and the extent to which such library policies assist in the strategic control of crime wave in the said library. With the use of descriptive survey research design and purposive sampling technique questionnaire which was the sole instrument for data collection for the research was administered to 15 librarians in University of Buea Library. When subjected to descriptive statistical analysis, the collected data revealed that mutilation, theft, hiding of books and answering of phone calls were among principal crimes disrupting proper librarianship in University of Buea Library. Consequently, it was recommended that rules and regulations prohibiting the acts of making answering of mobile telephone calls, mutilation, theft and hiding of library books should be strictly implemented.

Blamed For Standing In a Place I Didn’t Even Want to Be

When a librarian is asked to write the policy then argues with others about the scope and value of the policy then comes out against the policy then is blamed for the policy’s contents six years hence.

There is a female patron standing at one of the patron computers praying to an online video of a church service.  The library is for everyone and I do mean EVERYONE. But you cannot stand in the middle of a library and disrupt other patrons by praying. You can pray silently. You just can’t do it out loud with your arms stretched toward the ceiling. The man she came with is reading the newspaper and pretending like he notice know her.

Active Shooter Policies in Libraries | ALA Annual 2016

“How many of you would be prepared to handle an active shooter in your library? How many of you have an active shooter policy?” Few hands were raised when BreAnne Meier from the North Dakota State Library asked these relevant questions at the Active Shooter Policies in Libraries Program at the American Library Association (ALA)’s recent Annual Conference in Orlando, FL. Meier described active shooter situations as ones where someone is actively engaged in killing, has access to a confined area or population, and is sometimes motivated by revenge. As a result, she explained, these situations are unpredictable and can change quickly, often lasting for such a short time as ten to 15 minutes.

The recent mass shooting at the Pulse nightclub in Orlando lent tragic immediacy to the topic as Meier explained what librarians should and should not do—and how to ensure the safety of library patrons—if faced with an active shooter. In sharing the policy at the North Dakota State Library, she advised librarians to either run; hide; or as a last resort, fight. If you can’t run, hide. Find an office. Close a door. Push a desk against a door. If you have to fight, don’t fight fair, advised Meier. Use a fire extinguisher, if necessary. But, be sure to commit to whatever you decide to do.
