DIY zine workshop - done!

I went to the diy zine shop at my city library after work tonight, you know, to connect with the community and make use of the valuable resources the library provides which I already know because I was a library kid and I also worked at a library for 2 years in university.

I was 10 minutes late because I had to commute right after work and there was just no way to get there on time even on the tollway. But it was a very small group, only 4 other people besides the 2 librarians and so it was chill and pleasant and everyone got to talk freely about whatever, such as why ai and chat gpt is evil, which I obviously agree with lol.

I didn't finish my concept zine because I was listening in and working on the template zine sheet they already printed out and also hangry from work (it was not a good day at work). But I'm really glad I went! The other people there were younger than me but not by much, and I think they had a good time and we all trauma-bonded a lot lol.

Now I have more zine resources and made a working concept of how I want my first zine to look like.

If you have libraries in your city, please please please check in on them. Even if you don't check out a book, every footstep inside matters for their budget, even taking a book off a shelf and placing it on the cart to be reshelved matters (do not reshelve it yourself.) Bigger libraries will have sewing machines and 3d printers (I've already 3d printed something) and other craft equipment inside a room for use. Most libraries will have book sales and book clubs, some will have craft kits and diy workshops and gardening activities, with separate events for kids and teens and adults. Libraries have audio books and free online classes and movies too. The only downside is they may not have the latest media right away or there will be long holds, but there are gazillions of free stuff already available, and you can always make requests for future holds or purchases.

Yay for libraries! They are working so hard with so little money to help as many people as possible, trust me.

Your job sounds amazing, I'd love to work in a library (for complicated reasons it's most likely not gonna happen). How did you get into this field, if you don't mind me asking?

It's fun! And also challenging and not very lucrative (for reasons specific to my library mostly) but I *love* it.

I sort of fell into it, honestly. I have *always* loved libraries. And the library I work in is actually the library I grew up going to. I didn't ever think of it as a career option until I moved here and ended up on the library board of trustees. The librarian started hinting that she thought I'd be good at working *at* the library and eventually her assistant left and there was an opening and I wasn't working at the time (by choice) and it was a very part time job doing something I really cared about so...I just went for it. I started out doing pretty basic stuff but now I am the person who makes sure the library runs most days (I organize volunteers and catalog books and do all of our event promotion) because the actual library director is very focused on a major project that is going to result is us having a NEW library (which we desperately need).

I really genuinely love it. It is fun, and really important work that feels fulfilling even when it's frustrating.

Does anyone have suggestions as to how I should determine if a character is important enough to include in the file for the book? If there’s a detailed description of a character who appears just the once, should I include it?
