A year ago I wandered into the local animal shelter (you know, just to look) and met this girl who had already had a few different families but was brought back, for reasons still unknown to me. I walked out after signing papers, super confused about the big life decision I had just made. This little friend was brought over to my car and instantly jumped into the front seat. I squeezed into the car and we sat in the front seat together for a few minutes, just staring at each other. Her back was missing patches of hair (that the shelter said was from an allergy, but they lied and she was actually very sick), but she was already looking at me with such trust in her eyes. I immediately took her to the pet store because of course I wasn't even a little bit prepared. The whole time we were in the store I prayed that she would behave, that she wouldn't rip away from the thin leash they gave me at the shelter. We sat on the floor in the back for a few minutes as I tried to calm her and myself at the same time. We made it home in one piece, and she was immediately surrounded by people who loved her as soon as they heard I'd brought her home. It's been a year of growth and learning and endless amounts of love. Lily taught me the meaning of unconditional love and that when your pup gets sick, it's best to clean it up quickly. We've been through A LOT in our first year together, but she's still been the bright spot of every day. She's a fast learner, incredibly sensitive to everyone's emotions, and I'm almost sure she understands every word I say. She is the absolute love of my life and has saved me on several occasions.
