I don’t know about you, but sometimes I just need to calm the hell down, especially these days when it seems there is no rhyme or apparent reason to anything anymore. There is an ambient song that I uncovered about two years ago while searching through Soundcloud for an atmospheric track to help me chill out. I would then start putting it on, a lot, to calm down and mediate when I needed it. The song has no lyrics, just a beat resembling a rhythmic heart with some minor additional effects laid on top (light guitar and piano). I’d put it on to write, to relax, to drive, hell I’d even put it on while going on walks with my dog. Imagine my surprise when I found out just recently it was reported in studies that listening to the track reduced anxiety by up to 65% in pre-surgery medical patients. This is Marconi Union, and the song is Weightless from the album of the same name. This may be the world’s most relaxing tune, legitimately, and you can find numerous articles on the topic online that attempt to confirm this if you care to do your own research. The musical trio themselves hail from the UK, and their catalog is heavily ambient in style, focusing on giving the listener texture over any other single factor. I don’t have a heck of a lot of say about the band because they seem to be highly reclusive, preferring to decline interviews and never really self-promoting in any significant way. So one more fun fact about this song then; it was produced with the assistance of the British Academy of Sound Therapy for the express purpose of inducing a trance-like state in the listener with low-tones. This song proves that not only is music universal, but also highly useful in unconventional ways. Smash play on this track whenever life seems too much to bear, and relax, dear listener. Everything is going to be alright.
