Fun fact: The wing nut on a clamp will break before anything else when tightened too far.
Uhh welcome to the hell that is beginning already. I'm flipping back and forth between a document for one show, a cue list for another, while also trying to respond to emails. All while watching the first full run through of a play I'm designing for. Woot woot.
Oops life update: I started my job as a lighting tech intern and so far it's been incredible!! I've learned many many things and I'm so proud of all the work we've done. I actually built a sound rack and installed it in LinkedIn's cooperate office which was a grand time!
This continues to be the most beautiful show I've ever worked on. thank you Chicago for the friends, memories, late nights, bodily aches, blood, sweat, and many. many. tears. Happy closing night!
It’s tech week...
here are some tips to eliminate any unnecessary stress from your tech week!
Meal prepping can SAVE YOUR LIFE
meal prep your breakfast, your lunch, hell even your dinner if you know you won’t have time to order or go get food. It also saves money!!
Layout clothes and any tools you need the night before
Sometimes the night before you are tired as shit, but the next morning you are still tired as shit and kicking yourself for not thinking about future you. Just lay out the same black jeans and black t-shirt you wear everyday.. damn techies... ALWAYS REMEMBER YOUR TOOLS!!! If you bring your own wrench (which I totally recommend) put that in your bag/toolbox/backpack along with any other tools. I bring a flashlight, mat knife, multi tool, wrench, e-tape, and wire strippers every day.
Depending on your grade level, do your damn homework/course work during a study hall, or while you have a dinner/lunch break.
The amount of times I’ve heard people complaining about not finishing their homework till 3 am even when it was totally avoidable by a little bit of time management- it’s ridiculous. Stay committed to tech, but think about future you.
THINK ABOUT FUTURE YOU
THINK ABOUT FUTURE YOU. think about future you. ThiNk AbOuT FuTUrE YOu. think about future you.
you’ll really be pissed off at past you if you don’t. Even if it sucks in the moment, take the extra time to go the extra step and complete your assignment for the next night. Print out the paperwork NOW rather than tomorrow morning. Update your plot now instead of 20 minutes before you have to go to hang or focus. Update your crew at 11:30 pm TONIGHT instead of an hour before call the next day. Not only think about yourself, but think about the crew you are working with because tech goes a hell of a lot better when there is communication between everyone.
I’m about to go into my 15th tech week and I’ve been lucky to have picked up some habits during tech week that make it all a lot easier. If anyone has any questions about technical theatre, how to get involved, tech week, or anything in general, let me know! Happy hell week!
Very proud of our team for USITT tech Olympics!! I took 2nd in light hang and had so many great networking opportunities. Thank you USITT and everyone there for ensuring that I belong in theatre.
