“Beyond the valley of the dolls”
THE SMILE OF REIMS
Here’s a short poem honouring the smiling angel of Reims.
smiling angel messenger of God, the stone cutters knew how to paint God’s smile on your radiant face
chipping away all access stone revealing a pregnant smile, filled with promise
an angelic smile proclaiming to passers by - who silently dare to meld their gaze with yours - the passionate love and the intimate nearness of a God who labours, sculpting hearts of flesh out of stone patiently making all things new
smiling angel messenger of God, caught in the crossfire, bruised and broken by war, you stand tall
becoming in our midst a sign of joyful, wild, persistent hope : reconciliation between people.
philip chircop after a poem by Jean-Marie GUERLIN found in the Reims Cathedral parish bulletin.

After everything, sex was what I missed the least.
