something that's striking me this morning: the little bit of monomon's "elegy for hallownest" that we get to see may be straight up parroting of pale court propaganda, but the fact that she called it an elegy in the first place feels super telling, especially given that she wrote this before fully submitting herself to her duties as a dreamer (also worth noting that it's some damn clever foreshadowing plopped right at the beginning of the game)
basically, monomon either knew from the start or after coming to that conclusion along the way that the pale king's plan was doomed—or rather, perhaps, that it should be doomed to failure. it didn't matter how earnestly she mourned hallownest's passing; she did that preemptively for a reason. we know from her dream nail dialogue that she wanted the stasis to end on philosophical grounds at the very least, and if this has been her stance for as long as this detail seems to indicate... well
monomon was already a subject performing a service on behalf of her king. it's not like she would have much if any room to object to the proceedings or decline her participation altogether—that is, until the only people left to argue with were her fellow dreamers. at least with them, accorded something like equal footing, she would have a fighting chance
