My work entitled 'Lighthome' depicts of of my dearest childhood friend's Della. Della and I as primary school friends were inseparable and developed a sisterly bond throughout our schooling years. Since I was a weird outsider in school, I relied heavily on Della as one of my only forms of friendship. I relied on her a lot for coping with my new found childhood anxiety and my battles with bullying and depression. You can imagine how devastated I was when she told me her family would be moving back to Melbourne on the beginning of my second year of high school. The yin to my yang had left me, the rock holding me down had slipped from underneath me. My mental state diminished and I struggled a lot in trusting and dealing with friendships. But the move is what shaped who I am today. My vision for this piece was to show the coming of age of Della by having two different photos to work from. The density of the composition represents the inseperable closeness of our forever friendship. The scattered work creates the idea of the instability of friendship overtime and the change, growth and adaption of friendship over a long time span. The title of this work pays homage to Matt Corby's song, 'Lighthome' as Della and I dubbed it our song, since it was the last song we listened to together before she moved. For me, also, it seemed that in the darkest of my depressive state, Della seemed to be the only thing lighting my life and feeling familiar to me. Overall my work was created to capture the unstable nature of change in one sense of self due to external factors and relational influences. — Lighthome by Emma Leach

Home is where the heart is couldn’t be more true! When you stay away from home for more than a week, whether you’re at Uni, or another country, you feel it in your heart.

This song from Matt Corby is one of my favourites from his album because of it’s rawness and the harmonies when it gets to the main meat of the song. It really expresses the passion of being home.
