Beervana Top Five

After sifting through the weekends notes, my top five Beervana beers are listed below, they are in no particular order and represent the beers I felt were my most memorable of the whole weekend.  

Invercargill Brewery: 

Smokin’ Bishop

For me, another winner from an exceptional brewery, a 7% smoked Bock that has a whiff of the quintessential British pub favourite, Bacon Fries. It was my first beer on Friday and knocked me for six, HUGE smokey flavours balance well with underlying toffee sweetness. Could I drink a pint of it? Possibly not, but a 330ml bottle would be the perfect nip.

Yeastie Boys:

Her Majesty 2011

Saison’s seem to be a trendy drop at the minute with several of NZ’s top breweries recently releasing their take on them. This years Majesty release is an 8% Imperial Saison that certainly justifies the term ‘Funky’ that's often associated with this particular yeast strain. I scribbled down…Tongue coatingly smooth texture, mouthfeel like swallowing chomped up  Brazil/walnuts with a spoonful of lemon curd… dry and refreshing.

Monkey Wizard Brewery:

My first try of a beer from the brewery just out of Motueka, my tasting notes don’t reveal too much, possibly because I tried this towards the end of Friday evening. I noted…like the brilliant Renaissance Stonecutter, but less bulky, has the undoubted ability to dazzle a full back and charm the ladies. Drying, candied fruit and satisfying.

Feral Brewing:

Boris

An 11.5% Russian Imperial Stout, and the sneaky brew from Aussie, creeping in the back door. I had to add this one to the list; firstly, because I had been put off from returning to the Australian stand due to the very ordinary Little Creatures, Rogers Ale. Secondly, it was up there with the amazing 8wired Barrel 18, a beer that I didn’t think could be touched. I noted, as dark as a Siberian winter with the alcohol level to get you through it…Multilevel flavours of burnt caramel, toast, coffee and a long lingering finish, disguises it’s alcohol level very well. 

It was a weekend filled with some amazing beer, of the Festival beers my top drop was a tie between the peppy 8Wired Festivus, and The Golden Ticket's Emperor Strikes Black, which has to get a mention for the cracking title alone. I unfortunately missed out on the Ad Lib Crown Prince, the spiced Pumpkin ale, a beer I would have loved to have tried, as well as the Lighthouse Brewery Stout. Liberty Brewing company's C!tra also garnered some praise in my notebook, with the summary:

"need a pint by the sea... in sun... to be sure."
